Location: Fargo, ND.
The
Senior Survey Crew Chief
will primarily lead survey crews in the field by providing topographic, boundary, and construction surveys on various civil engineering projects including highway and urban roadway projects. The role requires writing legal descriptions for boundary surveys, certifying right of way and subdivision plats, and performing title and deed searches in accordance with professional land surveying standards. This position reports to the Transportation Group Leader.
Responsibilities
Provide land surveying services including plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects.
Gather field survey data through conventional surveying and GPS methods.
Research existing records including maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents.
Prepare and review legal descriptions for right-of-way documents, subdivision plats, and survey records.
Create accurate field notes, drawings and record changes in conditions while in the field.
Delegate survey tasks to other crew chiefs or technicians under direct supervision.
Learn and follow surveying methods and standards required by state and public agencies.
Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers and engineers, providing updates and progress throughout all phases.
Serve as a potential stepping stone to Project Manager or Client Manager roles, overseeing budgets, fee estimates, and financial performance.
Make independent, rational judgment calls.
Communicate effectively with contractors, engineering staff and project owner representatives in the field.
Follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with strong attention to detail.
Work independently and as part of a team.
Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
Travel and out-of-town stays are required; overtime may be needed during construction season.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
PLS (Professional Land Surveyor) licensed in North Dakota and/or Minnesota.
10+ years of topographic and highway/roadway construction staking experience preferred.
Proficiency with GPS, robotic and total station equipment.
Familiarity with NDDOT survey data collection and construction methods a plus.
Ability to perform complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop and coordinate geometry software.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Detail-oriented, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements
Operate computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
Work in outdoor environments.
Perform prolonged standing and walking for surveying tasks.
Lift equipment or objects weighing 50–75 pounds.
Work scheduled office or onsite hours.
Maintain requirements for reasonable accommodations if needed.

$100k - $120k (Actual base pay depends on experience, education, licensure, location, and internal equity)
