The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for leading and implementing all daily activities and events and the planning and facilitation of weekly activities for their assigned camp. The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for performing the essential functions as outlined in this analysis. The Summer Camp Counselor is a seasonal part-time, non-exempt employee. This is an at-will position. Immediate Supervisor : Recreation Coordinator Essential Functions
Perform all job tasks within policies and procedures of the Park District’s Personnel and Safety manuals. Attend staff meetings and complete in-service training sessions. Take initiative to lead daily activities including crafts, games, sports, etc. Attend field trips and keep an accurate head count of assigned group at all times. Actively participate in all camp activities including swim field trips, by supervising campers while you are in the water. Take responsibility for camper discipline and communicate with parents, as needed. Complete administrative tasks and paperwork/record keeping. Maintain good public relations and be an enthusiastic supporter of the park district and its programs. Supervise and help with the work of the Junior Counselors, when applicable. Adhere to all park district and program policies and procedures. Schedule
25 to 35 hours per week. Schedule may vary. Typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. Pay Rate
Starting Pay Rate : $16.00 to $18.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Qualifications
At least 16 years of age. A minimum of one year of experience working with children, preferred. Ability to effectively work with children ages 3 to 13 years old. Strong leadership skills. CPR, AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain this certification prior to the start of the camp program. Psychological Considerations
Must have the ability to deal with other people, sometimes under stressful situations. Must be able to resolve differences and problems that arise with participants and work together with employees. Must be mature and able to use good judgement. Physiological Considerations
Must have the ability to lift materials up to 40 pounds. Must be able to swim and actively participate in activities and be in good physical condition with abundant energy. Must be able to assist children. Environmental Considerations
Most activities are performed outdoors; these conditions include all weather conditions, especially hot temperatures and sun exposure. Some activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting, temperature, and noise. Cognitive Considerations
Must have the ability to read, write, and speak English. Must be able to understand and follow instructions. Must possess good safety awareness and judgement. Must exhibit problem‑solving ability and good judgement in keeping with the mission of the Park District.
