Overview
The
Swim Instructor
will work under the direction of the Program Director to develop and instruct safe, enriching and effective youth and family swim programs that meet the needs of participants and the community at the
YMCA of Southern Maine
- Greater Portland branch.
We are hiring for the following shifts:
Monday's-Thursday's from 4:00PM–8:00PM
Saturday's and Sunday's from 8:30AM–12:00PM
This is an evergreen role, meaning we are always accepting applications for this position due to ongoing hiring needs.
Responsibilities

Promotes feelings of mutual respect, acceptance, and appreciation. Supports people with unique experiences or points of view to share their perspectives. Provides safe,effectiveand creative instruction for individuals at all levels.
Programming– Provides quality andtimelyguidance,instructionand support to all members through proper instruction in group settings. Educates adult members on current relevant principles, practices and research, and healthy lifestyle information as relevant tochild’sswim class, or child, as interested. Provides effective individual supervision and encouragement during program time. Regularly supports programming by teaching swimlesson,assistingwith special Y activities and events, and other duties as needed.
Leadership– Is a collaborative, engaged, and active participant in our Association, including communicating in an effective andtimelymanner and making sound decisions.
Relationship Building– Develop positive, authentic relationships within the Y that lead to greater awareness of the Y’s mission and impact, growth in number of people served, as well as revenue. Listens and expresses self effectively and with an understanding of the needs of a particular audience.
Personal Growth– Maintains a high degree of emotional maturity and interpersonal skills and is committed to personal growth and skill acquisition.
Operations & Safety -Maintainsa professional and clean environment, including equipment and surrounding work areas. Ensures all equipment is in working order and, if applicable, maintenance records are properly documented; reports any concerns to supervisor. Provides rapid andtimelyresponse to all accidents, situations,incidentsand emergencies appropriately,calmlyand professionally using proper techniques and completes incident reports as needed.
Mission Advancement- Is an advocate for the Y by promoting our cause. Supports philanthropy by increasing awareness about the annual campaign within the Y community.
Data Tracking & Documentation–Maintainsaccurateand consistent data tracking and documentation, asrequired.
Qualifications
16 years of age or older.
Experience working withyouth,preferred.
Certifications including:
Professional Rescuer, CPR/AED/Basic First Aid, Emergency O2.
Successful completion of Principles of Youth Development, Youth Swim Lesson V-6 prerequisites and Swim Instructor class.(Required prior to working shifts as a swim instructor)
Redwoods Child Safety Training(or within30 daysof hire).
Detail oriented; extremely reliable, dependable, and punctual.
A criminal background check isrequiredand may include fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior tohire. This will be paid for by the YMCA of Southern Maine.
The ideal candidate must be able to complete allphysicalrequirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
