Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.

Operates motorized equipment (belt loaders, rollers >4 tons, skid steers, tractor‑mounted injection patchers, tractor with batwing 15’ mowers, combination tractor with side‑mounted mowers) in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations.

Performs skilled manual labor: cleaning ditches, placing sideline and cross‑line pipe, patching roadway base and surface failures, installing driveways, removing fallen or dead trees from roadway, performing vegetation management, installing/re‑repairing flat sheet signs, extruded panel signs, sign assemblies, foundations, setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and related work‑request activities.

Operates single and tandem‑axle dump trucks (with trailers) to haul material and transport equipment for maintenance and construction operations.

Assists in operation of heavier equipment (front‑end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, specialized slope mowers, tractor with ditcher) and specialized equipment for cleaning drainage ditches, installing sideline and cross‑line pipe, bridge repairs with guidance.

Operates and maintains powered tools for tree/vegetation removal, pipe/ditch cleaning, concrete sidewalk/gutter repair, limb trimming, weed eating, facility maintenance, litter and dead animal removal, and other maintenance activities.

Conducts safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment to ensure proper lubrication, coolant and oil levels, inspection of hoses and belts, tire inflation, and leak detection.

Monitors the preventative maintenance program to ensure routine maintenance schedules are followed and equipment wear is tracked to prolong life.

Operates portable tank‑mounted salt brine anti‑icing equipment and standard dump truck with snowplow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.

Assists during emergency or inclement weather operations; available for on‑call rotations, extended hours or extended shift operations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Requirements include walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
