Overview
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Operates motorized equipment on a county maintenance Work Request/Patching Crew. Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates a range of medium to heavy equipment in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations. Responsibilities
Perform skilled manual labor in duties such as patching roadway base and surface failures, cleaning ditches and placing sideline and crossline pipe, installing driveways, removing fallen trees from roadways, cutting dead trees on right-of-way, and vegetation management to improve visibility of signage. Install, repair, and maintain flat sheet signs, extruded panel signs, sign assemblies, and sign foundations; set forms and pour/finish concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other related work. Operate single and tandem axle dump trucks (including with trailers) for hauling material and transporting equipment. Assist in the operation of heavier equipment (e.g., front-end loader, motor graders, backhoes, slope mowers, truck-mounted road patcher) and specialized equipment for cleaning drainage ditches and bridge repairs with varying instruction levels. Operate and maintain powered tools in roadway maintenance tasks such as tree and vegetation removal, cleaning pipes and ditches, concrete sidewalk and gutter repair, limb trimming, weed eating, facility maintenance, litter and dead animal removal, and related activities. Conduct safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment to ensure proper lubrication, coolant and oil levels, condition of hoses and belts, tire inflation, and absence of leaks; monitor maintenance programs to prolong equipment life. Operate portable salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump trucks with snowplow attachments and sand spreaders to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations; be available for on-call rotations and extended hours or extended shift operations. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Physical and Work Environment
The physical demands for the essential functions include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and manipulating objects of varying size and weight. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Requires walking for extended periods, navigating rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to moving traffic and environmental hazards. May require outside-of-schedule work during inclement weather or emergencies. Frequently exposed to outdoor conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis. Non-Discrimination Statement
