Base pay range $24.50/hr - $29.50/hr
Position Summary This position works with the ophthalmologist to provide patient care by performing ophthalmic testing, accurate history taking and documentation, assisting with medical treatments and procedures, and other clinical activities as requested. Provides education to the patient in a safe, caring manner. Accurately documents clinical data into the electronic medical record.
Primary Responsibilities
Prepares patient for the ophthalmic exam by the Ophthalmologist
Performs anterior and posterior segment initial diagnostic testing, including but not limited to automated refraction, a-scan ultrasonography, corneal topography, optical coherence tomography, pachymetry, refraction and visual field testing.
Obtains and maintains an updated patient medical, social and family history
Accurately documents patient’s chief complaint, history or present illness and all required exam elements
Provides patient education as directed by physician’s care plan for the patient. Counsels patients by transmitting physician's orders, use of drops, contact lenses, drugs, and answers questions about surgery and specialty imaging required/ordered.
Assists with office procedures including but not limited to laser procedures, intravitreal injections, minor procedures, and slit lamp procedures
Coordinates scheduling and prepares required documents for patient procedures
Accurately records all information in EMR system according to established standards and requirements
Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostics, and keeping patient information confidential.
Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following established EMG policies and procedures
Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, maintaining supplies, and promptly reporting equipment issues
Maintains stock in exam room in accordance with standard inventory and physician preferences
Assists with minor procedures which may include maintaining sterile field

Work Environment
Daily operation of exam room equipment: hand-held instruments, muscle light, retinoscope, direct ophthalmoscope, biomicroscope (slit lamp), Goldmann tonometer, iCare, tonopen, phoropter and EDTRS screen
Daily operation of various diagnostic equipment: manual and automated lensometer, auto-refractor, ocular coherence tomography, corneal topography, A-scan ultrasonography, corneal pachymetry and non-mydriatic retinal imaging
Ability to assist patients, as necessary, into exam chairs for diagnostic testing and treatment
Ability to maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties
Ability to complete work in a timely, accurate and thorough manner
Ability to work collaboratively with members of the EMG team and support a positive EMG Culture
Qualifications
High School diploma required – undergraduate degree preferred
Current BLS certification, or completion of certification course within 6 months of date of hire
JCAHO certification preferred, or completion of the Ophthalmic Medical Assisting home study course and exam within 6 months of date of hire
Professional Development
Keeps abreast of advances on ophthalmic care within subspecialty
Participates in continuing education programs for professional development and meeting requirements for recertification
Pursues OSC, COA, COT or COM TJCAHPO certification after OA is obtained
May pursue EMG ASC surgical assisting program in order to assist in surgery in the EMG ASC
Participates in all required staff meetings and keeps abreast of all updated EMG policies
