Responsibilities

Perform routine (journey level) food preparation work at the state hospital, including preparing, cooking, portioning, distributing, and serving food for regular and therapeutic diets and textures.

Follow prescribed menus, recipes, standards, and complete required reports.

Maintain sanitation of kitchen equipment and work areas, following kitchen and food service safety procedures and HACCP guidelines.

Work in the ingredient room or drive the delivery vehicle as required.

Assist with special diet preparation and meal distribution, including snacks and supplements.

Respond to phone calls promptly and transmit messages clearly and positively.

Complete required training per policy and maintain accurate records.

Participate in disaster response or COOP activation as needed, which may require alternate shift patterns and/or locations.

Qualifications

Minimum of 12 months experience cooking food in a service operation.

Knowledge of food preparation methods, food storage standards, and sanitation regulations.

Ability to prepare and serve food, clean dining and food preparation areas, and maintain accurate records.

Basic math skills used in cooking/preparation.

Lifting ability of at least 25 pounds; ability to bend, reach, stand, and walk on hard floors for extended periods.

Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions and to use a vehicle; a valid Texas driver license is required if a vehicle is driven.

Strong communication skills and ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Capability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients.

Applicants will undergo a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must register with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age. Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours may be scheduled.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. State hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals; if not immunized for influenza, a mask may be required.
