Brief Job Description The Cook I performs routine food preparation in the Central Kitchen under general supervision, preparing, cooking, portioning, and distributing food for regular and therapeutic diets. The role includes sanitation of equipment, overseeing kitchen operations during the absence of higher‑level Cook staff, and may involve transporting ingredients, handling cash in the facility canteen, and coordinating with vendors.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attend work on a regular basis; perform shift, rotating, extended, or overtime duties as needed.

Prepare food using proper equipment, utensils, and sanitary conditions.

Portion and serve special diet food in accordance with kitchen policies.

Maintain snack supplies and prepare scheduled snacks and supplements.

Supervise assigned employees in food preparation, delivery, sanitation, safety, and hygiene.

Assist in serving food for special diets following procedures.

Follow food‑handling, state, federal, and HACCP guidelines.

Receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors.

Practice proper sanitation and storage of dishes and equipment.

Clean kitchen, stock room, and other food‑service areas as required.

Observe safety procedures and practices.

Handle cash safely in the facility canteen.

Answer telephone promptly and transmit messages clearly.

Complete required training per policy.

Participate in disaster response or COOP activation as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of food‑preparation methods, storage standards, and sanitation regulations.

Skill in operating and sanitizing food‑service equipment.

Ability to prepare and serve food, clean dining and prep areas, and maintain accurate records.

Basic proficiency in reading and speaking English.

Follow written and oral instructions.

Basic math competence for cooking and preparation.

Lifting ability of at least 25 pounds, bending, reaching, and standing/walking on hard floors for extended periods.

Ability to work in hot or cold conditions, and to use senses (smell, taste, see) effectively.

Work harmoniously with co‑workers and residents.

Registrations, Licensure & Certifications Position may require a valid Driver’s License and eligible driving record for operational use of fleet vehicles. Applicants with an out‑of‑state license must provide a certified driving record or obtain a Texas license.

Initial Screening Criteria Food‑preparation experience. High‑school graduation or equivalent is preferred; experience and education may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).

Males ages 18–25 must register with Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to random drug testing.

Flexibility for overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays is required.
