Summary:
The Custodian – Evening - Lead is responsible for the overall maintenance of the building and grounds by ensuring the building is regularly and thoroughly cleaned, equipment properly maintained, all safety standards upheld, and school grounds attractively maintained.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collaboration:
Assists in all receiving and delivery operations. Develops positive, effective working relationships with learners and staff.
Communication:
Communicates to substitute custodians of duties each shift and follows-up to ensure work was completed. Communicates with building administrators regarding cleaning, maintenance matters, and employee concerns. Provides training via job shadowing to new staff and substitutes. Provides building security by reporting all damages and ensuring doors are locked at appropriate times. Documents and reports safety hazards and potential facility, grounds, or security compromises. Directs, coordinates, and oversees the work of the building custodial staff to ensure tasks are done thoroughly and timely. Expresses ideas with integrity through appropriate formats.

Understands complexities of cultural and global issues and how they affect employees and learners. Partners with others to resolve potential controversy and conflict through respectful discussion. Proactively seeks to understand others’ ideas, opinions, and skills.

Connects with team members to share ideas and improve the overall learner and employee experience.

Ensures all applicable safety standards are upheld. Contributes to all custodian performance evaluations. Maintains a current manual of material safety data sheets on all chemicals and cleans substances, assisting staff in obtaining information. Complies with all district procedures, rules, and regulations set forth in the safety manual. Analyzes information to generate new knowledge and understanding.

Maintains communication with supervisor and director regarding general feedback, career advancement opportunities, and areas of growth.

Maintains composure while dealing with stressful situations. Proactively seeks out resolutions and takes initiative to resolve knowledge gaps.
Responsibility:
Provides upkeep to floors and other surfaces by cleaning and renewing floor surface finishes. Maintains all furniture, equipment, and fixtures by cleaning, dusting, and polishing. Collects and disposes of all wastepaper and debris according to school district disposal policy. Maintains bathrooms, locker, and shower rooms daily by cleaning, disinfecting and restocking. Replaces light bulbs as needed. Maintains safety and appearance of the grounds by picking up and disposing of trash, removing snow and ice, mowing and trimming. Keeps all equipment in safe and efficient operating condition by following manufacturer’s operating and care guidelines. Moves furniture, supplies, and equipment within the building as directed. Ensures furnishings, supplies, grounds, and building interior and exterior are maintained for a safe, secure environment for students, employees, and visitors.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Requires reaching with hands and arms regularly.
Requires standing, walking, bending, speaking, and hearing regularly.
Requires manipulating objects, tools, and/or controls with hands frequently.
Requires bending at the trunk more than the average person.
Requires close and peripheral vision.
May lift up to ~50 pounds.
May climb ladders up to ~20 feet.
Will be exposed to outdoor elements, high temperature, chemical compounds, sharp edges, and moderate to loud noise levels.
Will work with the public and WFPS staff while managing competing demands.
May encounter bloodborne pathogens or other bodily fluids on rare occasions.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.
Prior custodial experience is required.
Must be able to operate floor maintenance equipment, snow blower, lawn mower, trimmer, and all cleaning equipment.
Language Skills
Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions and short correspondences in English.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally, expressively, and reactively.
Other Skills and Abilities
Exercise confidentiality, discretion, and good judgment.
Adhere to the assigned work schedule by maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise other custodians/substitute custodians.
