Job Summary
The paraprofessional will support students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in a self–contained special education classroom. Under the direction of certified teaching staff and related service providers, the paraprofessional will assist in implementing instructional programs, promoting social‑emotional growth, managing behaviors, and ensuring student safety across all school settings.
Qualifications
Associate degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
Valid Ohio Educational Aide Permit (as defined in section 3319.088 of the ORC).
At least one year of experience working with students with disabilities, especially those with emotional or behavioral disorders; preferred.
Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent in challenging situations.
Training or willingness to be trained in crisis intervention strategies (e.g., CPI, PBIS, de‑escalation techniques).
Ability to implement CPI‑approved physical holds and use verbal de‑escalation techniques.
Basic understanding of trauma‑informed care and behavior management strategies.
Physical ability to support students in crisis and assist with physical tasks (lifting, escorting, personal care if needed).
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Basic computer skills and willingness to use assistive technologies.
Performance Responsibilities
Instructional Support:
Assist the teacher in implementing IEPs, BIPs, and classroom routines.
Support students in small groups or one‑on‑one settings under the direction of certified staff.
Adapt and modify instructional materials as needed.
Help maintain a structured, predictable, and supportive learning environment.
Utilize strategies aligned with positive behavior supports and trauma‑informed practices.
Behavioral Support:
Observe, record, and report behavioral data and student progress.
Implement de‑escalation strategies and interventions under supervision.
Provide consistent reinforcement of behavioral goals and expectations.
Maintain student dignity and confidentiality.
Classroom & Student Supervision:
Monitor student activities and ensure safety within classroom, school grounds, and transitions.
Escort students to/from activities, therapy sessions, or other school environments as needed.
Assist with crisis intervention and follow district procedures for behavioral incidents.
Collaboration & Professionalism:
Communicate effectively with teachers, related service providers, and administrators.
Attend relevant trainings and professional development as required.
Maintain a collaborative, respectful, and proactive approach with staff and students.
Follow all district, state, and federal laws regarding special education, confidentiality, and student rights.
Working Conditions:
May involve physical intervention in crisis situations (training provided).
Requires flexibility, emotional resilience, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing environments.
Must maintain a high level of alertness and attentiveness to student needs throughout the day.
Terms of Employment 9‑month contract, 5‑day work week, 6.5‑hour days (8:55 AM – 3:55 PM). Reports to Classroom Teacher, Building Principal, and Director of Special Services.
