Summary Cytogenetic Technologist Trainees are individuals within the UNC Medical Center McLendon Clinical Laboratories who have obtained a bachelor's degree but do not have clinical laboratory experience or certification in Cytogenetics. The Cytogenetics Trainee will receive mentoring and education in the field of Cytogenetics and will be required to obtain certification in Cytogenetics CG(ASCP) within three years.
The Cytogenetics Trainee will follow regulatory guidelines and laboratory policies under guidance by certified cytogenetic technologists to learn all aspects of Cytogenetics in order to qualify for the CG(ASCP) certification exam.
This position works onsite Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:30pm.
Responsibilities
Preparation of specimens including peripheral bloods, bone marrows, lymph nodes, tumors, products of conception, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling; preparation of media and other reagents; cleaning of laboratory equipment and supplies.
Preparation of slides for both routine Cytogenetics and Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis.
Analysis and karyotyping of chromosomes using both automated and manual methodologies under guidance of senior technologists. Learning and using ISCN nomenclature for interpretation of results.
FISH set up, analysis and interpretation for constitutional and acquired specimens under guidance of senior technologists.
Quality assurance and quality control of laboratory equipment and supplies.
Education Requirements Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry.
Licensure/Certification Requirements No licensure or certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements None required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements Strong attention to detail, ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
