Trees Atlanta is a nationally recognized non‑profit citizens' group that protects and improves Atlanta’s urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. Founded in 1985, Trees Atlanta works tirelessly to address Atlanta’s tree loss, protect its forests, and create new greenspace. Empowered by its wonderful community of volunteers, Trees Atlanta serves the metro Atlanta area, and has grown to become one of Atlanta’s most widely known and supported non‑profit organizations.
Job Description The Youth Tree Team is a seven‑week summer work program that introduces Youth to Trees Atlanta’s mission and a variety of “Green Collar” professions. Have you participated in the Youth Tree Team before? Check out our External Studies opportunities. If you're interested, select "yes" in the application and we will send you information at a later date. (Some opportunities may require you to be 16 years of age).
Responsibilities
Work on weekly maintenance projects, including watering, weeding, and mulching on the Atlanta Beltline Arboretum and other Trees Atlanta projects.
Attend weekly enrichment day field trips to learn about environmentally focused professions.
Participate in weekly personal finance coaching, which includes creating a budget, savings goals, and spending tracking assignments assigned by budget coaches.
Have the opportunity to complete a group project that will include a community presentation at the conclusion of the program.
Communicate the mission of Trees Atlanta by acting responsibly as an ambassador for Trees Atlanta while out on fieldwork.
Requirements
Must be a current high school student (rising 9th grader may apply).
Students aged 14 and 15 must have a valid work permit (if selected Trees Atlanta will initiate paperwork).
Be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions. The majority of the work is performed outdoors.
Must be able to attend the application selection activities on February 21st and February 28th.
Must be available to work Monday – Friday between 7:30 am and 12:30 pm.
Work in a physically demanding environment with much bending, lifting and shoveling.
Be willing to work as part of a team and effectively communicate with all staff.
Repeatedly lift approximately 30 lbs.
Have an updated tetanus shot (strongly recommended).
