Position Overview The Area Coordinator is a full‑time, live‑in professional staff member in the Office of Residence Life. The role is responsible for the day‑to‑day management, leadership, and oversight of one or more residence halls, fostering a safe, inclusive, and developmentally supportive living environment that promotes student success, engagement, and community.

Education

Bachelor’s degree required

Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field preferred

Required Experience and Skills

Prior experience in a college or university residential setting, or progressive work experience as relevant

Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment

Commitment to student development and high‑quality residential experiences

Understanding of student conduct, crisis response, and community development

Responsibilities

Implement a comprehensive community development model that promotes belonging and positive residential experience.

Provide personal support to residents through one‑on‑one advising, informal counseling, crisis response, and referrals.

Offer leadership and guidance to Resident Assistants and students at floor, hall, and campus‑wide levels.

Assist students with developmental challenges such as transitioning to college, managing academic and financial stress, and preparing for professional life.

Maintain high visibility and approachability within the residence halls by regularly engaging with residents and attending community events and programs.

Support and serve as a resource to the Residence Hall Association, encouraging student leadership and governance.

Identify needs of diverse student populations and special interest groups and ensure programs address those needs.

Assist with programming preparation and special projects as designated.

Maintain detailed records of community development, including programming participation, assessment outcomes, budget usage, and resource tracking.

Occasionally attend local, regional, and national workshops and meetings.

Enforce policies, support Resident Assistants in addressing behavioral concerns, and administer the student conduct process.

Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule to respond to emergencies, crises, and incidents involving student safety during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate a team of 8 to 16 Resident Assistants.

Assist with recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new Resident Assistants.

Support planning and execution of RA training programs.

Serve as liaison to various university departments and represent Residence Life on departmental committees.

Participate in regular staff meetings with leadership and lead weekly staff meetings with RAs.

Serve on and chair departmental committees as assigned.

Maintain open communication with professional staff and campus partners about critical incidents and facility issues.

Oversee administrative operations within the residential area, including key control, occupancy tracking, incident reporting, and reporting requirements.

Coordinate hall opening and closing procedures and submit work orders for maintenance and facilities.

Monitor, assess, and report on effectiveness of residence hall programs using data and student feedback.

Maintain accurate and confidential records related to student conduct, programming, maintenance, and staff supervision.

Participate in university‑wide events, student programming efforts, and orientation activities.
