Candidates may be subject to an in‑person skills assessment.
Responsibilities The Optical Technician is responsible for collecting and recording ocular and systemic patient histories, visual acuities, blood pressure, intraocular pressure, auto refractions, manifest refractions, performing external examinations, dry‑eye testing, and disease‑specific extra testing.
Collecting and recording patient medical history
Instructing patients on post‑operative care, medication use, contact lens care, and exam expectations
Performing visual acuity testing, auto and manifest refractions, and tonometry (measuring eye pressure)
Measuring pupil size and reactivity
Performing confrontational visual field testing and pachymetry (corneal thickness measurement)
Performing dry eye testing
Participating in light cleaning of the facility
Maintaining a sanitized environment
Performing corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, retinal thickness and topography, fluorescein angiography, and B‑scan ultrasonography
Assisting with contact lens fitting and instructing patients on insertion and removal
Preparing for and assisting with in‑office procedures, including consenting patients
Facilitating digital optometric appointments (training provided)
Position and Hours
Saturday hours are generally 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Travel
Travel between locations may be required for training or business needs; employees are reimbursed at the standard IRS mileage rate.
Qualifications
Minimum of one year assisting in an optical practice or as an optometrist assistant
Ophthalmic experience is a plus
Skills and Abilities
Superior interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to effectively multi‑task
Attentive to detail and accuracy
Salary $17–$24 per hour plus bonus, commensurate with experience.
