Job Summary Shop Diesel Technician II – Responsible for performing licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, mechanical/hydraulic/electrical diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. Works under the supervision of a Sr. Shop Diesel Technician or higher and continues to learn advanced mechanical and diagnostic skills.
Duties
Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform job tasks.
Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide assistance, and resolve their problems.
Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations.
Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, keep commitments, and keep sensitive information confidential.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
Occasionally travel to perform work at customer location.
Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
Document work following company standards and upload pictures and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices and/or the Karmak application.
Accurately complete DOT forms and all other required documentation in a timely manner.
Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental policies, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
Participate in and complete all company‑required safety training.
Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks; conduct safety checks and daily pre/post trip inspections.
Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling, starter, alternator, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, clutches, and differentials.
Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment and perform major repairs as needed.
Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
Diagnose, adjust, and repair various truck equipment.
Identify problems, determine the accuracy and relevance of information, and generate and evaluate alternatives.
Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using hand‑held computers and pressure gauges.
Assist Shop Diesel Technician I with diagnostics.
Requirements
High School Diploma / GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field (or 5 years’ experience).
Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
Meet DOT regulations issued by the FMCSA; pass a DOT‑regulated background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
Submit a current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining; otherwise, complete a DOT physical.
Be at least 21 years or older due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations.
Hold a valid state driver’s license and obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
Skills & Abilities
Understand implications of new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making.
Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
Ability to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring, including repetitive tasks.
Communicate information succinctly and organized; engage in effective two‑way communication.
Determine the type of tools and equipment needed.
Accurately judge distances between objects.
Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions.
Certifications
Required: ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
Preferred: ASE T3 (Drivetrain), ASE T4 (Brakes), ASE T5 (Suspension), ASE T6 (Electrical & Electronic Systems), ASE T7 (HVAC), ASE 608/609.
