Primary Duties
Disassemble, decontaminate instruments, instrument trays, procedural trays, and equipment by hand-washing and utilizing various types of washer decontaminators, sterilizers, and ultrasonic machines following policy/procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
Apply infection control, quality assurance, and departmental policies to clean, disinfect, and/or sterilize surgical instrumentation, flexible endoscopes, instrument trays/containers, packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment.
Inspect instruments for cleanliness and test for functionality.
Assemble instrument trays, procedure trays, packs, and kits according to prescribed methods using pick‑list/count sheets.
Wrap, peel-pack, and/or containerize all instruments following manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) and department policy.
Label items with name, description, date, initials, and load sticker for tracking and quality control.
Load sterilizer racks utilizing manufacturer loading recommendations.
Operate steam sterilizers, chemical sterilizers (Sterrad, Steris System 1E), and high‑level disinfection equipment, monitoring mechanical, chemical, and biological processes and accurately logging data.
Complete documentation records prior to and after sterilization and verify cycle parameters.
Utilize computerized systems for scheduling and documentation, troubleshooting as needed.
Store and distribute sterile items in accordance with AAMI and AORN standards.
Prioritize daily workload using the surgery schedule and assign priority to emergency requests.
Adhere to hand‑washing requirements, PPE usage, workflow patterns, and standard precautions to maintain a dust‑free, safe environment.
Maintain sterility assurance protocols, disinfection/sterilization load parameters, and equipment monitoring logs.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for sterilization, high‑level disinfection, and biological monitoring.
Coordinate sterile processing with operating room and nursing unit functions, and other user departments.
Perform biological and chemical monitoring in line with quality improvement standards.
Assist with daily inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock levels.
Support department and organizational goals and maintain good working relationships with other departments.

Position Summary Responsible for decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of instruments, trays, equipment, and supplies according to prescribed procedures and aseptic technique. Adheres to all policies, procedures, AAMI and AORN Standards and Recommended Practices.
Position Specifications
Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 pounds)
Prolonged standing/walking
Occasional lifting of supplies/equipment
Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
Working Conditions
Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances
Potential exposure to infections and contagious diseases
Regular exposure to blood‑borne disease risks
Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements
Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries
Subject to varying and unpredictable situations
Minimum Education/Certification/Experience
Graduate High School or equivalent (GED)
Certified Sterile Processing Technician from IAHCSMM or CSBPD within 8 months of hire
Minimum of 1 year of surgical or sterile processing experience preferred
Current BLS Certification
