Position Objective The
Machinist
is responsible for fabricating precision components used in life‑saving medical devices. Working from technical drawings and CAD models, the machinist develops CNC code using
MasterCam
to machine moderately complex parts. This role requires expertise in setting up and operating
CNC grinders, mills, and lathes , as well as proficiency with manual machining equipment and inspection tools. The Machinist ensures all fabricated parts meet exact specifications by applying rigorous attention to detail and utilizing advanced quality control methods. Beyond technical execution, this position provides guidance to junior machinists, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborates closely with engineering and quality teams to maintain compliance with medical device manufacturing standards.
Responsibilities
Review technical drawings and CAD models to determine optimal machining methods, including required machines, tools, and fixtures.
Identify and secure necessary tooling; develop CNC programs using MasterCam and generate accurate code for part fabrication.
Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and grinders to produce precision components that meet medical device specifications.
Conduct dimensional inspections using micrometers, test indicators, optical comparators, toolmakers’ microscopes, and reverse molds when required; ensure all parts meet drawing tolerances.
Make tooling and machine adjustments as needed; document inspection results and maintain detailed notes for traceability.
Collaborate with management to resolve equipment or process issues; perform periodic maintenance tasks as directed.
Discuss prospective jobs with internal customers, recommend design modifications to simplify manufacturing, and assist with production machining when required.
Contribute to writing procedures, process documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives; suggest enhancements to equipment and workflows.
Support the development of new products and technologies through machining expertise and process input.
Work effectively with machine operators to resolve problems; foster positive relationships with peers and respond constructively to feedback.
Manage workflow in assigned areas to ensure efficiency and compliance.
Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet production and quality goals.
Qualifications Other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum 3 years as a CNC machinist in a production environment (required).
At least 4 years of experience in machining operations (required).
5+ years working with medical devices or other highly regulated products (required).
Technical Expertise: Demonstrated ability to generate CNC code from CAD models using MasterCam or similar CAM software. Skilled in creating CAD models for basic fixtures to support machining operations. Proficient in MDI programming mode; experience with FANUC controls highly preferred. Hands‑on experience machining metals, plastics, and ceramics (preferred). Strong knowledge of GD&T and mechanical drawing interpretation.
Quality & Inspection: Proficiency with precision measurement tools including micrometers, test indicators, optical comparators, and toolmakers’ microscopes. Ability to use vision systems and CMM equipment (preferred). Familiarity with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 13485 standards (preferred).
Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to effectively discuss machining and inspection issues with engineering, quality control, and management teams. Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently. Effective oral and written communication skills to interpret and follow instructions accurately.
Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and internet applications. Experience navigating Windows operating systems and file structures.
Problem‑Solving & Leadership: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Strong organizational and time‑management skills to manage workflow effectively.
