(DCAS). DCAS evaluates and maintains New York City’s most iconic building portfolio, supporting over 80 agencies with a $1 billion-plus annual procurement budget.

Resources And Support Needed To Succeed

Recruiting, hiring, and training City employees.

Managing 55 public buildings.

Acquiring, selling, and leasing City property.

Purchasing over $1 billion in goods and services for City agencies.

Overseeing the greenest municipal vehicle fleet in the country.

Leading the City’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions from government operations.

Facilities Management & Construction (FMC) Role FMC manages, operates, and maintains 55 City‑owned buildings across all five boroughs. The Mechanical Maintenance and Operations group handles all heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning, and emergency mechanical system repairs.

All Steam Fitters Perform Related Work

Physical tasks: working in hot environments, handling steam leaks, using 6‑inch to 4‑foot pipe wrenches, using 60‑pound pull combination wrenches, climbing ladders and scaffolds up to 25 ft, moving large pipe sections.

Installation and maintenance of piping, controls, and equipment for heating, compressed‑air, refrigerating, air‑conditioning, steam, hot‑water, fire‑suppression, cooling, and sprinkler systems.

Boiler, feed‑water, vacuum, and condensate equipment installation; fuel‑oil piping; laying out work from plans.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of full‑time, satisfactory experience as a Steam Fitter; or

No fewer than two and a half years of such experience plus sufficient full‑time experience as a helper or apprentice, or relevant education/training totaling five years of acceptable experience. One semester of apprenticeship or helper experience counts as six months; each semester of approved trade or vocational training also counts as six months.

License Requirement

Some agency appointments require a valid New York motor vehicle driver’s license, to be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

Welding certifications.

Residency Requirement New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment. Certain employees with two continuous years of City service may be eligible to reside in surrounding counties; discuss eligibility with the agency representative during the interview.
