RATP Dev maintains a fleet of buses, which includes 35‑ft. Cummins ISL engines, Alison B4000, Ford E450, 25‑ft Cutaways, and Triton V‑10 gasoline engine. Under general supervision, the prospective candidate will strictly follow the maintenance manager’s directives and perform a variety of journey‑level diesel mechanic and related mass‑transit vehicle maintenance/repair works, inspections, maintenance and electrical repairs, ranging from minor to major. The new hire will be placed in “A,” or “B,” classification based on experience and aptitude. “B” mechanics, under supervision and training, will have opportunities for advancement to “A” mechanic.

The maintenance manager sets the work schedule for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Two (2) years journey‑level diesel or heavy equipment maintenance/repair experience

Two (2) years automotive maintenance/repair experience

Two (2) years heavy‑duty transit bus repair maintenance/repair

Special Certifications and Licenses Ability to obtain a Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement within 90 days of employment.

Willingness to follow chain‑of‑command

Availability to work varying shifts and operations as assigned by the manager (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays)

Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed. These include the SunTran Maintenance Facility, the Downtown Station, and other SunTran service areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnose problems with equipment and/or their sub‑systems, which may include electrical, hydraulic, engine, mechanical, drive train, brake, and/or other specialized systems to determine the nature/extent of the repair needed, estimate the parts needed, and/or provide information regarding the cost effectiveness of repair versus replacement.

Rebuild/repair a variety of equipment and/or equipment sub‑systems, which may include diesel engines, hydraulic systems, brakes, transmissions, electrical systems and components, power‑takeoffs, pumps, cooling systems, air conditioning, and drive lines, to cost‑effectively extend the safe operating life of the equipment, minimize equipment replacement, and/or minimize equipment down time.

Perform a variety of minor equipment maintenance/repair, including replacing lights/lenses, adding fluids, lubricating, making minor adjustments, inflating tires, and/or replacing a variety of hoses to ensure safe operation of equipment, minimize major repairs, and/or prevent damage to equipment, facilities, or the environment.

Perform preventive maintenance on a wide variety of public transit vehicles and other specialized equipment to identify potential operating problems, extend the safe operating life of the equipment, maintain warranty, ensure equipment operates safely, and minimize repair costs.

Obtain needed parts to facilitate maintaining/repairing equipment.

Perform related work as required.

Work Environment Physical Demands Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
