Department Summary:

VCU Facilities Operations provides timely, quality workmanship and service delivered in a cost-effective manner to support the university’s mission. Facilities Operations serves to be the facilities maintenance and service provider of choice for our customers.

Duties & Responsibilities

Independently respond and complete service work orders requiring diagnosis and repair of electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, electrical portion of mechanical equipment, fire alarm systems, motors, motor starters, variable frequency drives, low voltage controls and other electrical equipment/systems.

Independently perform and complete regularly scheduled preventive maintenance to electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, electrical portion of mechanical equipment, variable frequency drives and other electrical equipment/systems.

Advise supervision and management by recommending equipment maintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priority attention.

Communicate orally and in writing with building occupants and supervision regarding work schedules, system problems, estimated completion times and effects of system problems on occupant safety and comfort.

Maintain records of equipment service and repairs.

Provide work site guidance and direction to other zone team members, assuring safe and orderly completion of service requests and projects.

Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniques of the trades to increase their skill level and ability to work independently.

Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assure compliance with specifications, codes and drawings.

Other duties as assigned, including work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies, and assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis.

Clean and organize electrical related materials in Zone shop and mechanical areas; participate in periodic cleaning of Zone shop.

Minimum Qualifications

Several years of experience in commercial/institutional electrical or mechanical maintenance.

State of Virginia Journeyman Electrical License required or the ability to obtain within the first year of service.

Electrical courses I, II, III, code classes, basic and advanced training or equivalent combination of experience and trade/craft training.

State of Virginia Driver’s License.

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Ability to diagnose, repair, service, and install a wide variety of electrical systems.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees, and customers.

Knowledge of appropriate building codes.

Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years’ experience in commercial/institutional mechanical and electrical maintenance preferred.

Salary & Benefits Salary Range:

$68,000 – $76,000 ($32.69/hr – $36.53/hr) + up to $2,500 Sign-on Bonus
