Department Summary:

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a Carpenter for Facilities Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities The Carpenter position provides carpentry-related reactive and preventive maintenance for classrooms, offices, and research spaces on both the MCV and Monroe Park Campuses. In addition to maintenance work efforts, this position also assists with minor customer requested renovations, including floor replacement, painting, and cabinet/casework installation.

Responsibilities Include (but Are Not Limited To)

Utilize knowledge of the carpentry trade to perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation of building infrastructure.

Provide exemplary customer service to all faculty, staff, and students supporting the University’s mission of teaching, high-impact research, and creative expression.

Identify, document, and correct building deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advise management of tasks requiring priority attention.

Provide quality workmanship and service to maintain the University's capital assets, to maximize system availability, and to minimize unscheduled downtime.

Qualifications

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Experience in commercial/institutional carpentry maintenance. Ability to repair and service a wide variety of building infrastructure including but not limited to doors, acoustical ceilings, VCT flooring, drywall, cove base, and plaster.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees, and customers.

Knowledge of appropriate building codes.

Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications, and scopes.

Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment.

Valid Driver's License.

Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) or more years of experience in commercial/institutional carpentry maintenance.

Working knowledge of the use of scissor lifts, personal vertical lifts, and snow removal equipment.

Familiarity using work management software.

Salary Range:

$55,000 - $60,000 and up to $2,500 sign on bonus
