GarrettX is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Shop Technician with expertise in metal fabrication and welding to join our team. This position is responsible for fabricating, repairing, and modifying heavy construction equipment, including bulldozers, excavators, motor graders, heavy‑duty dump trucks, and heavy‑haul semi‑trucks and trailers. The ideal candidate will have experience with welding, cutting, and structural repair to maintain and enhance our fleet's performance and longevity.
Key Responsibilities Fabrication & Welding
Perform structural repairs and modifications on heavy equipment using MIG, TIG, and stick welding techniques.
Fabricate and install metal components, including brackets, guards, and reinforcements, to improve equipment durability.
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to complete custom fabrication projects.
Operate cutting tools such as plasma cutters, oxy‑fuel torches, and grinders to prepare metal components.
Equipment Maintenance & Repairs
Diagnose and repair cracks, breaks, and worn‑out parts on frames, buckets, blades, dump beds, and other structural components.
Reinforce and rebuild undercarriages, blade arms, and attachment points for bulldozers, excavators, and motor graders.
Repair or fabricate ramps, fenders, and structural components on heavy‑haul semi‑trailers and dump trucks.
Perform hard‑facing and overlay welding to extend the life of high‑wear surfaces.
Safety & Compliance
Adhere to OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations while performing welding and fabrication work.
Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe working environment.
Properly store and dispose of hazardous materials, welding gases, and metal scraps.
Additional Responsibilities
Collaborate with mechanics, supervisors, and operators to understand repair needs and priorities.
Assist in general shop duties such as equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and inventory management.
Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on each project.
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum 3‑5 years of experience in metal fabrication and welding, preferably in heavy equipment repair.
Proficiency in MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and stick welding (SMAW).
Experience working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum materials.
Ability to operate metal forming equipment such as press brakes, shears, and rollers.
Strong mechanical knowledge of construction and heavy‑haul equipment.
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and welding symbols.
Familiarity with hydraulics, electrical systems, and equipment frame alignment is a plus.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in various environments, including outdoor and shop settings.
Welding certifications (AWS, ASME, etc.) are preferred but not required.
Work Environment & Schedule
Work is primarily conducted in a shop environment with occasional field repairs as needed.
May require overtime and weekend work depending on project deadlines and emergency repairs.
