Position Overview
Performs decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, hospital and physician offices, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in sterile processing
Experience
Previous sterile processing experience
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Retrieves contaminated instruments and delivers sterile instruments where needed.
Removes debris by manually cleaning instrument.
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of decontamination equipment.
Inspects instruments and equipment to ensure the safety of patients.
Tests and reports detected problems with all equipment.
Separates and keeps track of items that have been cleaned and sterilized.
Removes all waste matter from transfer carts.
Organizes, stores, and keeps records of sterile supplies.
Checks expiration dates on supplies.
Maintains a clean work area following established departmental policies and procedures, and infection control standards.
Operates all mechanical machinery within central sterile.
Applies established policies and procedures in completing work assignments.
Properly de‑lints towels and sheets.
Physical Requirements
Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK – exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
Able to bend, stoop, reach, and perform normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8‑12 hour shift.
Capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighing in excess of 200 pounds.
Working Environment
Physical environment may include hazards: high pressure steam, chemicals, electrical, mechanical, bio‑waste, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc.
Environmental conditions may vary in temperature, noise, odors, multi‑stimuli, etc.
Will be working in PPE for an extended period of time.
Skills and Abilities
Works well in a fast paced, stressful team environment.
Works with direction to effectively carry out varied responsibilities.
Demonstrates flexibility in response to changes in work volume, staff, and scheduling.
Understands and adheres to Infection Control policies and procedures.
Plans, organizes, and prioritizes time to maximize efficiency and meet deadlines.
Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.

Shift: Night (United States of America) – 11 p – 7 a, Monday‑Friday.
Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
Exempt/Non‑Exempt: Non‑Exempt.
Location: 2500 Hospital Drive, Martinsburg, WV.
Company: BMC Berkeley Medical Center.
Cost Center: 615 BMC Sterile Processing.
