Elk Grove Village, Illinois, (pop. 33,127), a strategically located, progressive community that is home to the largest consolidated business park in North America, is seeking a dynamic, detailed and skills‑oriented candidate for the position of Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department maintains Village‑owned property, infrastructure, and equipment. It consists of the General Operations Division, the Utilities Division, and the Engineering Division.
The Maintenance Worker is a union position under the general supervision of a Public Works Foreman. This position will primarily be assigned to the General Operations Division but will be expected to assist in other activities as directed. The position performs operation, maintenance, and repair activities for the Village’s infrastructure to enhance the quality of life in our exceptional community. The position will be involved in various Public Works activities within the operational areas of streets, land, and forestry, responding to emergency overtime situations, sewer clogs, water main breaks, and snow and ice control.
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Completes assigned tasks such as asphalt patching, street sweeping, tree and brush removal, leaf collection, sign maintenance, sewer cleaning, stormwater system repairs, water main and service line repairs, and concrete work.
Entering and updating data in the Village’s asset management software to maintain accurate records of asset inventory, maintenance, and repair activities.
Operating heavy trucks and equipment to repair and maintain Village infrastructure.
Assisting with the set up, teardown, and cleanup of Village special events.
Performing snow plowing and salt spreading as part of 24/7 winter operations to ensure safe roadway conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED equivalent required. This position is physically demanding and requires semi‑skilled manual labor and the operation of various light and heavy‑duty equipment. Working knowledge and experience in Public Works activities; skill in operating power tools and equipment; and effective communication skills. Candidates must exhibit a passion for public service and a willingness to work overtime and respond to off‑hours emergencies.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License with a safe driving record. Required to have a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements or to obtain licenses within six (6) months of employment.
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week
Opening Date: December 12, 2025
Emergency overtime as needed/required.
Alternating weekend standby assignments are required.
PAY RANGE: $30.72 - $44.18 per hour
Closing Date: Open until filled
Candidates will only be offered a non‑negotiable starting salary of $30.72 per union contract.
