Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Health & Physical Education, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with the appropriate endorsement to teach high school PE:
PE – Physical Education (K–12) (required)
MB – Health (K–12)
Previous experience teaching secondary students is strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of adolescent physical development, motor skills instruction, fitness concepts, and effective PE pedagogy.
Knowledge of safety protocols, injury prevention, and proper use of equipment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for students of varying abilities and fitness levels.
Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute to a positive school culture.
Position Description:
Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School Physical Education Teacher to join our dynamic instructional team. The ideal candidate will foster a positive, safe, and engaging environment that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong wellness habits. As a High School Physical Education Teacher, you will play an essential role in supporting student well-being, physical development, and social-emotional growth.
Physical Requirements:
Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
Terms of Employment:
Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with the Michigan Physical Education Standards and Detroit Early Middle College curriculum.
Promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness across all activities.
Create a positive, inclusive, and safe environment that supports students of all physical abilities.
Demonstrate proper techniques and safety procedures for physical activities, equipment use, and team sports.
Assess student progress regularly through fitness evaluations, skill assessments, and participation measures.
Provide constructive feedback and support to help students build confidence and develop physical and social-emotional skills.
Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff to enhance student well-being and contribute to schoolwide initiatives.
Maintain clear communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, expectations, and participation.
Participate in the teaching and learning cycle, including data analysis, action planning, reteaching, and reflection.
Support student plans such as IEPs, 504 Plans, and Behavior Plans, adapting activities to meet individual needs.
Maintain equipment, gym spaces, and outdoor facilities in a safe and organized manner.
Participate in professional development to deepen knowledge of physical education, wellness, and instructional best practices.
Contribute to a respectful, collaborative, and positive school culture.
Adhere to district and school policies, procedures, and expectations.
Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
