The City of Casper is looking for a detail-oriented, motivated Engineering Technician to support a variety of municipal infrastructure and construction projects. In this role, you’ll coordinate field work, perform construction inspections, create and update technical drawings and maps, and assist with survey and utility verification using GPS/GIS tools. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and the public while contributing to projects that directly impact our community. Incumbents are responsible for coordinating engineering projects, performing inspections of construction work, and completing drawings, maps and other documents as directed.
REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Receives general supervision from higher level engineering staff. Coordinates assigned construction and/or traffic control projects; estimates costs; inspects work, assesses progress; approves payments; approves minor modifications to plans; follows up on items under warranty; and maintains related records of activities. Serves as a lead to lower level engineering staff; provides guidance, training, and mentoring opportunities. Generates and updates maps, illustrations, plans, charts, and blueprints. Provides records, maps and related documents to contractors and homeowners; provides information regarding engineering projects. Surveys construction sites; calculates grades; determines boundary lines; and identifies technical problems. Performs field verification, measurement, and mapping of existing utilities and right-of-way (ROW) limits; collects, records, and updates data using GPS and GIS systems; identifies discrepancies between field conditions and existing plans or records. Locates water, sewer and storm sewer lines as assigned. Prepares bidding documents and specifications for purchasing supplies, services, and equipment; prepares and obtains quotes. Prepares complex drawings from engineering sketches, survey field notes, and other data for use in the design and construction of a variety of projects including water and wastewater lines, streets, and storm drains. Prepares a variety of illustrations, certificates, visual aids for various meetings and presentations. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
Trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances, and traverses. Elementary surveying techniques and practices. Engineering maps and records. Engineering drafting and design terminology, methods, practices, and techniques. AutoCAD and GIS software applications. Basic surveying techniques and practices. Basic engineering methods and procedures. Construction inspection practices and procedures. Standard office procedures and practices. Customer service practices. Utility infrastructure systems and right-of-way (ROW) standards and documentation practices. GPS and GIS data collection methods for mapping and verification purposes. Abilities (position requirements at entry):
Learn geographic area. Read figures quickly and accurately and to make mathematical calculations. Perform average engineering and mathematic calculations with speed and accuracy. Use and care for drafting, surveying, and mechanical instruments and tools. Understand and follow oral and written instructions and sketches. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Learn, interpret, and apply City policies, procedures, laws, and regulations. Organize records in an easily retrievable fashion. Operate a variety of modern office equipment and tools. Maintain a neat and professional appearance. Follow written and verbal instructions and direction. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor. Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values. High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience performing drafting and technical engineering work. Associate’s degree in drafting & surveying, construction management, civil engineering or a related field is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed below. LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
A valid Wyoming Driver’s License is preferred. Incumbents in this position work indoors in an office environment and are subject to the common noises associated with office work including telephones, copiers, and printers.
