Responsibilities

Works directly with Surgery Clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot and make recommendations for all trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique.

Maintains high professional and ethical standards and makes critical decisions in every aspect of the sterilization process.

Serves as resource and mentor for the SP team and for the surgical clinical team.

Assumes lead role in the absence of Manager and/or Coordinator.

Participates in distribution of instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the surgery schedule, pick lists and surgeon’s preference cards.

Demonstrates clear understanding of instrumentation utilized during surgical procedures.

Responsible for daily record keeping and chemical, mechanical, & biological monitoring of sterilization processes.

Conducts orientation of new team members.

Works as the patient’s advocate regarding the most correct and safest form of sterilization for all patient care instrumentation and equipment.

Ensures a safe environment through specific infection control procedures.

Determines the best method of processing ever-changing, highly technical tertiary patient care instrumentation and equipment.

Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.

Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

Works independently in all areas; participates in all unit quality control activities and recommends process improvements.

Completes special projects without supervision as assigned by departmental leadership.

Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship of their role to patient care.

Responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members as well as patients.

Qualifications Education/Training High school graduate or equivalent.

Licensure/Certification Nationally certified through Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). Maintain required CEUs.

Experience Minimum 2 Years of Experience in Sterile Processing.
