Job Overview
This position is responsible for performing specialized duties in the operation of a water treatment plant and water distribution system. Water Operator Certification (Level I, II, or III) is preferred, but applications will also be accepted for non-certified workers who have the ability to become state-certified when eligible. Responsibilities
Operate equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels. Service, maintain, operate and repair facilities and equipment including pumping devices. Install, repair, and maintain the water distribution system and fire hydrants throughout the City. Respond to after-hours emergencies. Qualifications
Basic skills typically associated with a high school education and sufficient experience to understand basic principles of water distribution and maintenance system such as an apprenticeship or experience working. Valid SD driver’s license. Ability to
earn appropriate state-certified water license when eligible . CDL not required but helpful. Compensation
Pay scale moves through the pay scale by passing State Operators Certification Courses. A non-certified worker anticipated starting wage is $20.974 (2025) $21.603 (2026) per hour; Operator I entry level wage is $24.324 (2025) $25.053 (2026) per hour; Operator II entry level wage is $25.555 (2025) $26.322 (2026) per hour; Operator III entry level wage is $26.849 (2025) $27.654 (2026) per hour.
