Location Bryan District – Brazos County, TX.

Position Information TxDOT’s Bryan District is looking for a General Transportation Tech I or II (Roadway Maintenance) based in Brazos Co. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Driving a state vehicle is required to perform the essential functions of this job.

Salary Plan / Grade

General Transportation Tech I: $40,918 – $61,130

General Transportation Tech II: $42,976 – $64,469

Pay Basis & FLSA Status Yearly. Nonexempt.

Work Locations Bryan/Brazos County – A/E Maint 2102 TABOR ROAD, Bryan 778032760.

Travel & Shift Travel: Yes, 5% of the time. Shift: Day. Shift Details: Compressed – Monday through Thursday, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM. Overnight travel: Up to 5%. Location flexibility: Onsite.

Job Duties General Transportation Tech I & II:

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.

Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.

Maintains highways and rights‑of‑way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

Drives to move/pick up litter and roadway debris.

Operates light equipment such as a front‑end loader – one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.

Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.

Sands or cleans bridges and roads; posts warning signs; helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Duties for a General Transportation Tech II:

Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Operates heavy equipment such as a front‑end loader – one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint stripper and dump truck.

Experience General Transportation Tech I:

None.

General Transportation Tech II:

1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license.

Must have a Commercial Class “A” Driver’s License or obtain a CDL “A” License within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Commercial Driver’s License

Required Competencies

Follow verbal and written instructions.

Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.

Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.

Understanding of maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements.

Understanding of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.

Ability to use applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.

Ability to maintain a safe working relationship.

Operation of light and heavy highway equipment.

Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.

Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Subject to hazards involving moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.

Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other devices.

Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

Standing prolonged periods of time.

Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.

Balancing – walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.

Stooping – bending body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist.

Kneeling – bending legs at the knee to come to rest on one(s) knee(s).

Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending the leg(s) and spine.

Reaching – extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.

Drug Test Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety‑impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
