Director of Development and Communications
Primary Function:
The Director of Development and Communications leads Safe Harbor’s development and communications team in executing strategies to meet the agency’s annual and capital budget goals. The Director will implement fundraising strategies to accomplish development and capacity-building initiatives identified in the organization’s strategic plan, increasing Safe Harbor’s fundraising capacity by building relationships in the community, including individuals, businesses, churches, organizations, and foundations. This position will oversee a successful grant program, including application and reporting processes. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position eligible for full benefits.

Development Manager, Grants Manager, Volunteer and Development Manager, Marketing and Communications Coordinator Job Responsibilities: Collaborate with the CEO and leadership team to assess agency funding needs and priorities. Strategize fundraising approaches and manage activities of the development and communications team to meet agency annual and capital budgets. Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development aligns with the organization’s values, vision, and mission. Create, implement, and monitor comprehensive fundraising and communications plans to expand philanthropic support, identifying ways to diversify and increase Safe Harbor’s funding base. Support a cohesive fundraising team through active communication and collaboration. Oversee all fund development activities, including relationship building, major donor cultivation, corporate sponsorships, government and foundational grants, in-kind donations, and special events. Manage a portfolio of major individual and organizational donors. Lead the design and implementation of communications, marketing, and volunteer programs to maximize prospect and donor engagement, ensuring a well-defined agency image and message consistency. Support the development of the annual organizational budget. Monitor grant activities and work directly with the CEO, leadership team, and Grants Manager to ensure compliance with guidelines and standards. Represent Safe Harbor at speaking engagements and community events. Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or CFRE preferred. 5+ years’ experience in nonprofit fund development. 1-3 years’ management experience. Proven track record of success in soliciting and securing gifts of $50,000 or more. Capital campaign experience preferred. Problem-solving, research, and analytical skills. Solid relationship-building skills, able to interface with community leaders, Safe Harbor program staff, administrators, and Board of Directors. Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills. Knowledge of and commitment to Safe Harbor’s mission and values. Knowledge of the Upstate community, its financial resources, and opportunities for engagement.
