Purpose Performs imaging procedures and assists in the performance of interventional mammographic procedures and assists in biopsy procedures.

Essential Responsibilities

Assists physicians and performs quality imaging through the use of fixed and mobile equipment throughout the hospital.

Performs radiography of pathologic breast specimens and practices aseptic techniques.

Understands methods and is capable of providing or assisting with physical breast inspection or palpation.

Corroborates patient’s clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner.

Prepares patients for procedures and explains nature of each exam. Gives proper instruction prior to, during, and following procedures.

Evaluates images for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded.

Assists physicians and radiology nurses in cases of adverse reaction to contrast media or acute emergencies as required.

Reviews status and type of procedure to be performed on patients to and coordinates exams with those scheduled in other imaging department sections to ensure procedures are sequenced properly, equipment utilization is maximized, and patient wait time is minimized.

Protects patients, employees and self from excessive exposure and follows “As Low As Reasonably Achievable” (ALARA) guidelines at all times.

Ensures neatness, cleanliness, and sanitation in department work areas and equipment and tracks the use of supplies, restocking when needed.

Actively participates in activities that promote safety, quality, regulatory compliance, and professional development.

Ensures accurate, timely and professional communication when communicating with supervisors, co-workers, physicians, patients and all hospital guests, and ensures timely delivery of appropriate and high-quality services.

Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.

Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum two (2) years of college or technical training.

Minimum of one (1) year radiology experience.

Three (3) to six (6) month training period if no mammography experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements

Maintains competency and proficiency with imaging procedures, including those that involve new or complicated exams and/or equipment by utilizing reading material and attending in-service programs.

General knowledge of a specialized or technical field normally associated with an A.A. or A.S. degree.

License, Registration, or Certification Requirements

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

NYS Radiologic Technologist License.

American Registry or Radiologic Technology Certification, Mammography (M).

Working Conditions Manual: significant manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity

Occupational: Significant occupational risk

Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force

Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
