NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position is primarily responsible for the procurement of retail scrap in an economical and efficient manner. The incumbent will establish and maintain effective relations with available suppliers, including actively soliciting new supply sources within the assigned region. The supplier base will include both established retail processors and suppliers who conduct business directly at retail buying facilities at mill divisions. The position reports directly to the Director – Raw Materials and coordinates activities with other Procurement personnel, Transportation, Melt Shop management, and mill scrap inspection and accounting personnel. Qualifications include a minimum of two years of experience in buying, melting, or receiving steel scrap, or similar exempt-level work experience. The incumbent should possess knowledge of sources and grades of raw materials, transportation issues, and scrap yard operations. The incumbent must be a self‑starter with strong negotiating, communication, math, and problem‑solving skills. The candidate must function effectively independently and as a member of a cross‑functional team. High ethical standards and a strong work ethic are key attributes. Key responsibilities: Cost‑effective procurement of retail scrap to support production plans. Maintain effective business relationships with current suppliers while seeking new sources that meet procurement objectives. Support commercial practices based on established policies to ensure fair, ethical, and productive relationships with suppliers. Stay abreast of current market trends and competitive practices to meet the needs of the mill(s) supplied. Provide information to corporate and plant management, as well as Transportation, to develop cost avoidance and savings opportunities in the purchase, transportation, processing, and consumption of raw materials. Serve as liaison between plant management, retail scrap suppliers, and the raw materials procurement team. Review scrap order shipment status weekly and make necessary adjustments to ensure timely receipt of goods and proper order application. Resolve discrepancies related to grading, weight settlement, order application, and other disputes with vendors and mill personnel, maintaining sound relationships. Educate and communicate specifications, commercial terms and conditions, and safety and environmental compliance requirements to shippers and plant personnel, as required. Maintain computer literacy in procurement systems, with proficiency in company scrap information systems and other business applications. The incumbent will also work closely with Transportation to explore new shipment methods and carriers that minimize overall scrap costs, keep plant and corporate management informed of changing market conditions, inspect and address scrap quality issues at the mill site, and educate stakeholders on specifications and compliance. The candidate must be knowledgeable in the computer systems and procedures used to receive, handle, and pay for scrap, assisting in resolving such problems and coordinating with administrative and accounting personnel.
