Scrap Buyer Manager – Monroe, MI

Job Summary The position is primarily responsible for the procurement of retail scrap appropriate for steelmaking. Under the direction of the Director – Raw Materials, the incumbent will execute the approved plan to minimize overall billet cost.
Nature and Scope The role is responsible for acquiring retail scrap in an economical and efficient manner, establishing and maintaining effective relationships with suppliers, soliciting new supply sources, and coordinating with Procurement, Transportation, Melt Shop management, and accounting personnel. The incumbent must have a minimum of two years of experience in buying, melting, or receiving steel scrap, knowledge of raw‑material sources and grades, and understanding of transportation and scrap yard operations. The role requires strong negotiation, communication, math, and problem‑solving skills, and the ability to function independently and as part of a cross‑functional team. Travel to support networking with vendors, mill personnel, and industry organizations is required.
Principal Accountabilities
Primary procurement of retail scrap for steelmaking.
Maintain business relationships with current suppliers and seek new sources.
Support commercial practices to ensure fair, ethical, and productive supplier relationships.
Stay abreast of market trends and competitive situations to meet mill needs.
Provide information to corporate, plant, and Transportation leadership to develop cost‑avoidance opportunities.
Serve as liaison among plant management, suppliers, and the raw materials procurement team.
Review scrap order shipment status weekly and adjust as necessary for timely receipt.
Resolve discrepancies (grading, weight settlement, order application) while maintaining strong relationships.
Educate and communicate specifications, commercial terms, safety, and environmental compliance to shippers and plant personnel.
Maintain computer literacy in procurement systems and resolve vendor issues with administrative and accounting personnel.
Qualifications Minimum two years of exempt‑level experience in buying, melting, or receiving steel scrap. Knowledge of sources and grades of raw materials, transportation issues, and scrap yard operations is required. Strong negotiating, communication, math, and problem‑solving skills are essential. Must be an independent self‑starter and effective in cross‑functional collaboration. High ethical standards and a strong work ethic are key attributes. Ability to travel and maintain a vendor network is required.
