Salary: Grade 10 $26.80 per hour, starting (Support Salary Scale)

Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is

non-exempt

from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System. Please see linked salary scale for the full range.

Responsibilities

Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality on the job.

Work independently and in groups to perform repairs and maintenance on school buses, utility trucks, and automobiles.

Operate a service truck to provide road service for Board of Education vehicles.

Assist and direct vehicle mechanics as needed.

Direct workflow in the shop for assigned shift as needed.

Assist with shop administrative tasks as needed.

Communicate with bus drivers, dispatchers, and managers concerning rapid response to breakdowns and other emergency situations.

Maintain vehicle repair and service records utilizing existing automated data processing software.

Create, update, review, and close work orders using fleet maintenance software (Faster).

Obtain parts from parts storeroom(s) as needed and document transactions using Faster.

Prioritize repairs and provide solutions for problems.

Drive a regular school bus route as a substitute driver when needed.

Provide written communication of work completed and items requiring follow up for the next shift.

Demonstrate basic computer skills including ability to use email, draft simple documents, and enter data in spreadsheets.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Vehicle Mechanic Foreman or Fleet Maintenance Manager.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Five (5) years’ of experience as an automobile and/or truck repair mechanic.

Two (2) years’ of experience as a school bus mechanic.

Three (3) years’ of experience using multiple types of diagnostic software.

Two (2) years’ of experience diagnosing problems with modern diesel engines with emphasis on selective catalytic reduction systems and exhaust gas recirculation systems.

Graduation from an automobile and/or truck repair vocational or trade school. Note: Two years of additional experience as an automobile and/or truck repair mechanic may be substituted for the required vocational or trade school training.

Certification as a school bus driver or receive certification within 6 months of employment date.

A clean driver’s record with no more than two (2) points within the last 2 years.

Skilled in diagnosing and repairing electronically controlled engines, transmissions, and fuel systems, as well as multiplexed systems, electrical systems and other major components on vehicles and specialized equipment.

Ability to access, read, and interpret online service material and resources including schematic, troubleshooting trees, and ladder logic diagrams.

Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion.

Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

ASE Automobile Technician certification at any level, with preference given to ASE School Bus Technician and/or Master School Bus Technician Certification.

Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
