Wheelchair Service Assistant The role of Wheelchair Service Assistant will be to support the team clinically and with administrative duties. We are looking for a positive, enthusiastic, dynamic and highly organised individual to fill this role and contribute to the ongoing development of this service. The role will be based at the Wheelchair Services Department within Sedgefield Community Hospital, Monday to Friday 08:30-16:30. Elements of the role will be patient facing, so you must communicate confidently and professionally with service users, their families and carers. This role is part of CDDFT community services; you must be able to travel independently between trust sites and to patient properties, transporting items of equipment where required. Main Duties of the Job County Durham & Darlington Wheelchair Service provides specialised assessment & provision of equipment for adults & children with mobility, postural & pressure care needs. The post holder will support the day‑to‑day running of the service, provide administrative support, undertake clinical duties and coordinate stock management.

Assist with appointment bookings, ordering and receipting of goods.

Attend care homes to complete equipment audits, hand over equipment to service users and demonstrate usage.

Organise and safely store stock, ensure health, safety and infection control standards are met, dispose of waste timely.

Actively contribute to service development, including use of innovative technologies.

Provide liaison with service users, families and professionals; support clinicians in clinics and on community visits.

Job Responsibilities

Accurate counting, putting away, disposing, assembling and labelling stock.

Maintain records, assist with departmental reviews, highlight delivery discrepancies.

Notify clinicians and central appointment team when items have arrived.

Support admin tasks: booking appointments, responding to emails.

Plan and organise workload to ensure timely deliveries.

Source and order departmental products, review procurement reports.

Complete basic handovers of equipment in clinics and patients' homes.

Work jointly with clinicians for manual handling and lone worker requirements.

Monitor and maintain overview of items on order; follow up delays.

Participate in audits and stock takes.

Update clinical records and liaise with carers.

Achieve team and individual targets and objectives.

Contribute to induction of new staff.

Arrange collection of returns and equipment no longer required.

Provide advice to patients and carers re: returns, repairs or replacements.

Cover for administrative colleagues to ensure goods delivered are receipted.

Return goods to suppliers following procedures.

Maintain clean, tidy and safe working environment.

Actively participate in service development and quality improvement.

Person Specification

Good manual dexterity & grip strength, ability to use tools for assembly and adjustment.

Commitment to client‑centred, non‑discriminatory practice.

Commitment to lifelong learning.

Full UK driving licence and ability to travel independently.

Ability to carry out moderate to intense physical effort; work within a demanding environment.

Qualifications

Minimum of 4 GCSE passes (or equivalent qualification). Must provide certificates at interview.

Experience

Customer services industry experience.

Administrative role experience.

Experience prioritising workload independently.

Experience working with children and adults with physical, mental health and learning disabilities.

Experience using electronic patient records.

Special Skills & Knowledge

Exceptional IT skills: spreadsheets, online ordering systems, email communication.

Data entry skills.

Exceptional communication, organisation, problem‑solving and motivation skills.

Knowledge of purchasing and supply activities.

Experience with electronic Purchase Order / Purchase to Pay systems.

Involvement in introduction of innovative technologies.
