CPW Hatchery Technician V/Hatchery Manager (Rifle, CO) The Colorado Department of Natural Resources (CDNR) invites applications for the CPW Hatchery Technician V/Hatchery Manager at the Rifle Falls Hatchery. This position directs and oversees daily hatchery operations, supports statewide fish production goals, and manages budget and staff.

Responsibilities

Direct, guide, and supervise one Technician IV and six Technician III staff and related temporary positions.

Plan, develop, and monitor capital construction projects, stocking, maintenance schedules, and budgets.

Direct water quality and quantity management, including flow and chemical treatments.

Oversee fish culture, nutrition, health, and pathology protocols, including disease prevention, treatment, and record‑keeping.

Maintain hatchery equipment, vehicles, and grounds maintenance, ensuring fleet and safety compliance.

Develop, write, and enforce emergency safety and security plans; secure facility after hours.

Represent the hatchery at interagency meetings, public outreach events, and provide technical information.

Prepare and submit reports, documentation, and requested data to CDNR stakeholders.

Qualifications

Five years of work experience in aquaculture, fishery or wildlife biology, or a related field; at least one year propagating and rearing sport fish or native species.

Appropriate education in fishery science, biology, or fisheries management will substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Current or former state experience relevant to this position is preferred.

Strong written and oral communication; decisive decision‑making under pressure.

Visionary leadership and management experience in a professional setting.

Required Competencies

Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.

Valid Colorado driver’s license within 90 days of relocation.

Resilience, adaptability, empowerment, inspiration, integrity, empathy, and accountability.

Conditions of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver’s license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement if operating state vehicles.

Must live in state‑provided onsite housing, on‑call 24/7 security and after‑hours monitoring.

Open‑call after‑hours duty and emergency response required.

Must be willing to exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally; tolerate exposure to weather, noise, chemicals, and hazardous materials.

Pre‑employment physical, drug testing, background check, and required holiday and weekend work schedule.
