Department Information The Colorado Department of Natural Resources manages and conserves Colorado’s natural resources.

The Hatchery worked full‐time in the Rifle, CO location with on‐call security and a need to reside on the unit.

Description of Job

Direct, guide, oversee, and monitor day‑to‑day operations of Rifle Falls Hatchery to meet statewide fish production goals.

Delegate, train, guide, and evaluate one Technician IV and six Technician III personnel.

Plan, develop, and monitor capital construction projects, stocking schedules, maintenance schedules, and budgets.

Direct water quality and quantity management for the facility and approve procurement of materials, supplies, and equipment.

Provide 24‑hour security, be on‐call, and respond to emergencies.

Maintain accurate documentation, reports, and records for the hatchery.

Execute and implement policies, directives, rules, and regulations of state and federal agencies.

Attend and represent the hatchery at interagency meetings and public forums.

Develop and enforce fish culture, distribution, health and pathology procedures, water chemistry, and safety plans.

Administration

Compose and approve reports, correspondence, and official records.

Supervision and Training

Supervise and train staff including hiring, counseling, evaluating, and rewarding employees.

Formulate daily work schedules and oversee operations such as feeding fish, stocking, cleaning, and water monitoring.

Fish Culture and Distribution

Develop SOPs, assess inventory, coordinate egg and fish stocking schedules, and oversee feeds and transportation.

Participate in domestic and wild fish spawning operations as required.

Fish Health and Pathology

Diagnose health problems, prescribe treatments, maintain treatment records, and ensure compliance with INAD regulations.

Water Chemistry and Flow Management

Monitor and adjust water flows and quality, maintain permits, and manipulate conditions to maximize fish health.

Unit, Vehicle, and Equipment Maintenance

Operate heavy‐duty equipment, vehicles, and conduct grounds maintenance following State Fleet Management schedules.

Safety and Security

Develop, oversee, and execute emergency and safety plans; patrol and secure the unit, live on site, and maintain 24‑hour on‑call status.

Public Relations

Conduct interpretive tours, provide technical information, and assist Colorado River Watch projects.

Other Duties As Assigned

Additional responsibilities as directed by management.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of experience in aquaculture, fisheries or wildlife biology, including at least one year of rearing sport fish or native species.

Substitutions

Fishery science, fishery biology, fisheries management, or biology education will substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior state employment or familiarity with state processes.

Managerial and leadership experience in a professional setting.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Decisive and visionary leadership qualities.

Required Competencies

Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.

Valid Colorado driver’s license within 90 days of relocation.

Resilience, adaptability, empowerment, inspiration, integrity, empathy, communication, accountability.

Conditions of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license; out‑of‑state applicants must obtain one within 90 days.

Must establish residence in Colorado and live in on‑site, state‑provided housing.

Must be available for on‑call duty and able to respond to emergencies.

Must be physically capable of moving up to 100 lbs and handling hazardous materials.

Must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement if required.

Pre‑employment physical, drug testing, and background check required.

Required to work holidays and weekends on a rotating schedule.
