Overview Houston Methodist is hiring an Environmental Services Technician for PRN shifts that include day (7am–7pm) and night (7pm–7am). The role performs general and moderately complex cleaning tasks, maintains infection control standards, and supports a safe environment for patients, guests, and staff.
Responsibilities
Clean and disinfect patient rooms, procedure rooms, and assigned specialty areas according to established policies and procedures.
Follow Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) standards for turnover and terminal cleaning of surgical and procedure rooms.
Use floor maintenance equipment and hazardous materials safely; dispose of waste in accordance with OSHA and hospital protocols.
Assist with linen distribution, collection, and tracking within the environmental services department.
Maintain environmental and infection control standards in all assigned areas.
Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers to promote a customer‑service focused environment.
Adhere to all safety, policy, and procedure requirements, correcting minor safety hazards and observing infection control precautions.
Essential Functions Interacts positively with patients, families, and staff; participates in meetings and huddles with a team‑focused approach.
Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to optimal results.
Responds promptly to patient and staff requests for directions and information.
Performs efficient room cleaning processes to meet or exceed HCAHPS cleanliness scores.
Tracks and logs safety and repair needs for equipment; reports issues to management.
Follows policies, procedures, and safety rules; corrects minor safety hazards.
Collects, transports, and disposes of solid or biohazard waste through proper procedures.
Uses appropriate cleaning, maintenance, and linen procedures for all assigned areas.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool verification, post‑secondary completion preferred).
One year of experience in a similar environmental services or cleaning role preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Required: DOT Hazardous Materials Certification (DOT).
Preferred: Driver’s License (DL) – state licensure.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned tasks.
Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing the English language for safety and security functions.
Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers using a customer‑service focus.
Accesses information within the department and hospital system to support department operations.
Multi‑task oriented; completes work within designated time frames.
Accurately and efficiently performs duties with minimal supervision.
Demonstrates efficient and safe use of housekeeping equipment and chemicals.
Communicates in a manner consistent with a customer‑service focus.
On‑Call & Travel On‑Call: No
