Overview The Nurse Practitioner Acute Care (PRN) position functions as a licensed registered nurse and care provider in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role is responsible for clinical diagnosis, treatment, counseling, health education, and primary care services, including physical examinations, ordering tests, and prescribing medications in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and Houston Methodist’s Professional Practice Model Nursing Practice and Professional Performance policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive nursing care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow‑up in inpatient and outpatient environments.

Educate patients about preventative care, prescribed treatments, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Conduct physical examinations, order diagnostic tests, and prescribe appropriate medication within state regulations.

Serve as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate, supporting staff development, coaching, and collaboration across the healthcare team.

Coordinate patient care under physician supervision, prioritizing by patient needs and preferences, attending inter‑professional rounds, and fostering a balanced workload for the team.

Leverage therapeutic communication to establish strong relationships with patients, families, and the inter‑professional team.

Identify and implement quality and safety enhancement initiatives, participate in protocol development, and conduct outcome evaluations for patient populations.

Affect direct patient care in alignment with the Nurse Practice Act of Texas and Houston Methodist quality standards.

Support financial objectives by documenting care accurately, optimizing efficiency, and reducing length of stay as directed by department goals.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience:

Minimum two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience.

Licenses & Certifications (Required):

Registered Nurse (RN) – Texas State Licensure (PSV Compact Licensure)

APRN Acute Care state license

Magnet ANCC‑recognized Acute‑Care practitioner certification

BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

AP – Prescriptive Authority – Texas Board of Nursing

DEA – Narcotics License (DEA)

Skills & Abilities:

Demonstrated competency in safe clinical practice, assessed through regular performance reviews.

Proficient in spoken, reading, and written English required for patient and workplace safety.

Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and co‑workers, using customer‑service language principles.

Advanced assessment, documentation, leadership, and analytical skills.

Therapeutic communication to build collaborative care plans with patients and the healthcare team.

Strong organizational skills, prioritizing multiple tasks independently and exercising judgment.

Time‑management proficiency and critical-thinking skills aligned with autonomous nursing practice.
