Position Purpose The Refrigeration/HVAC Technician II installs, repairs, and maintains the College’s refrigeration, air conditioning, and chilled water systems; performs routine building maintenance services on HVAC equipment for all College and athletic facilities; and troubleshooting services for off‑hour emergency response needs. The position also assists in servicing the ammonia refrigeration system in the Thompson Arena ice rink. The Refrigeration/HVAC Technician II exercises a high level of skill in all aspects of the trade and assumes responsibility for complex assignments.

Schedule 7.00 am – 4.30 pm, Saturday/Sunday off. Location: Hanover, NH. Remote work eligibility: Onsite only.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance on heat pumps, air conditioners, reach‑ins, walk‑ins, ice machines, and cooling towers.

Evaluate equipment conditions and make repairs to filter racks, drain pans, and other components.

Trace and locate defects in refrigeration systems; modify, alter, or substitute components to meet specified pressure‑temperature characteristics.

Keep records of refrigerant usage in accordance with EPA standards.

Replace major portions of cooling units such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies.

Tighten connections, make splices, insulate exposed wires, clean and lubricate moving parts.

Dismantle, repair, and reassemble pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, evaporators, and cooling towers.

Overhaul valves, adjust and replace gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings.

Align motors and flywheel drives; replace belts, fans, and fuses.

Perform basic plumbing work such as leak repair, unclogging drains, and faucet repair.

Perform work on hydronic systems and steam systems, including valve and actuator repair and insulation repair.

Collaborate with the Building Automation Shop to diagnose and repair systems.

Learn from senior technicians and mentor junior technicians, providing clear instructions and constructive feedback.

Required Qualifications

Directly related vocational training.

High school graduate with some post‑secondary technical school training, or the equivalent.

Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in refrigeration and 3 to 5 years’ experience in the electrical trade; or the equivalent.

Universal license in refrigeration from a recognized organization.

Ability to qualify as a Dartmouth‑approved driver.

Working knowledge of and skill and experience in all aspects of industrial, commercial and residential refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including low‑voltage electrical systems, refrigeration cycle theory, temperature measurement, refrigerant properties, heat transfer laws, refrigerant tables, air‑flow calculation and pressure‑temperature characteristics.

Awareness of ammonia‑based refrigeration systems.

Experience using relevant trade tools such as torches, gauges, multimeters; experience with pipe connections such as solder, brazing and mechanical joints.

Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, wiring schematics, and other specifications.

Knowledge of all relevant safety codes, building codes and environmental standards.

Ability to operate hoists, holders and pulleys to remove large units.

Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.

Capacity to participate in the College’s respiratory protection program and to respond to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem‑solving skills.

Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.

Ability to participate and contribute to projects involving a high degree of complexity; ability to analyze and evaluate issues and develop responsive solutions.

Computer skills on laptop, tablet and/or smartphone including basic word processing, spreadsheets and ability to use building system programs and work control system.

Ability to document and record issues and procedures.

Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates: driver safety‑electrical safety related work practices; lock‑out/tag‑out; respirator training; fit and physical examination; working in confined spaces; laboratory safety/hazardous waste management training; asbestos awareness training; bloodborne pathogen training.

Preferred Qualifications

A one‑to‑five‑year apprenticeship in refrigeration and/or electrical work.
