Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team to ensure the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding. Involved in the overall program maintenance and development as well as providing direct patient care.# **Major Job Functions**The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.
The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.
In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:* Conduct bedside lactation rounds daily* Serve as a clinical resource to all units within the hospital on issues related to breastfeeding* Collaborate with staff, physicians, and families on developing resolutions to any inpatient breastfeeding problems* Participate in the review, development and implementation of standards of care, policies, and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the organization where they might be served* Participate in the development and review of breastfeeding information for both inpatients and outpatients* Participate in the development and implementation of forms used to provide Lactation services both inpatient and outpatient* Organizes and provides regularly scheduled prenatal breastfeeding classes to prospective breastfeeding women and their support persons* Provide telephone support to women who call with questions regarding breastfeeding and maintain records of those calls* Maintain, review, and monitor breast feeding equipment loaned throughout hospital among units* Provide oversight of the Lactation Assistants and be available to assist them with consults* Other duties as assigned# **Minimum Qualifications**The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:## **Education and Formal Training**:* High school diploma or equivalent required* Associate’s degree preferred* International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required* Registered Nurse with state licensure preferred## **Work Experience**:* Experience with inpatient lactation programs and/ or knowledge of the types of clinical breastfeeding issues seen in the early postpartum days preferred## **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required**:* Knowledge of a wide range of acute and chronic conditions that may be seen in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients with children ranging from newborn to toddlers* Effective communication skills* Ability to communicate effectively with people from various educational and professional levels and backgrounds* Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English## **Physical Requirements**:* Speech and auditory acuity for communicating patient needs* Visual acuity for observation of patients* Much standing, walking, bending, and lifting* Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material**Required Licenses and Certifications**RN - Board Of NursingCape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender IdentityFor exceptional healthcare come to Cape Fear Valley Health where caring employees are committed to integrity, patient-centeredness and excellence throughout the entire healthcare process.
