Inpatient Registered Nurse - RN Employer: Fresenius Medical Care

Purpose and Scope The professional registered nurse Inpatient RN CAP 2 may be an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP) for new employees who meet the RN CAP 2 criteria or achieved through advancement from CAP 1. This position is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of clinically competent care including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. This includes delegation of appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs and Patient Care Technicians. As a member of the kidney disease health care team, this position participates in decision‑making, teaching, leadership functions and quality improvement activities that enhance patient care outcomes and program operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Perform all essential functions under the direction of the Supervisor and with guidance from the Educator, Preceptor, or another Registered Nurse.

Perform ongoing systematic collection and analysis of patient data pre‑during‑post treatment for assigned patients and document in the patient medical record, make adjustments or modifications to treatment plan as indicated and notify Supervisor, Physician, patient’s primary nurse and others as indicated.

Assess, collaborate and document patient/family learning needs to provide initial and ongoing education to patients and family.

Recognize patient status deviations, report to or collaborate with appropriate health team members.

Direct and provide safe effective patient care for assigned patients as prescribed for all modality specific treatment procedures.

Assess daily assigned patient care needs and collaborate with direct and ancillary patient care staff as needed.

Initiate and coordinate communication with FKC and Non‑FKC dialysis providers and appropriate contracted facility personnel to provide continuity of patient care.

Implement, administer, monitor, and document patient response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including appropriate notification of adverse reactions to physician and blood supplier.

Administer medications as prescribed and document medical justification and effectiveness.

Initiate and assist with emergency response measures.

Serve as a resource, leader, coach, mentor and role model for new and incumbent employees by setting examples of appropriate behavior, work habits and attitudes towards patients, co‑workers, Supervisors and the company at the facility and area level.

Provide specialized nursing care instructions to hospital/facility staff as stipulated contractually.

Assist in an outpatient facility on an as‑needed basis.

Serve as a Preceptor to new employees.

Complete CAP requirements to maintain or advance.

Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The position involves heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation; equipment aids or coworkers may provide assistance.

Requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing and the ability to bend over.

May occasionally move machines and equipment up to 200 lbs and lift chemical and water solutions up to 30 lbs as high as 5 ft.

Work environment characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels.

May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.

May be asked to perform essential functions of this position in other locations with the same physical demands and working conditions.

Day‑to‑day work includes desk work, computer work, interaction with patients, facility/hospital staff and physicians.

Requires travel to training/meeting sites and between assigned facilities.

Requires participation in on‑call rotation, night, weekend, holiday or as defined by individual program needs.

Employees required to take the Ishihara’s Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failure is not disqualifying and accommodations may be considered.

Supervision

Successful completion of all FKC education and modality specific training requirements.

Six months experience in acute dialysis as an RN.

Education and Licensure

Current appropriate state licensure.

Current or successful completion of CPR BLS Certification.

Meet practice requirements in all employed states.

Experience and Required Skills

Entry level for RNs with minimum 2 years of nephrology nursing experience.

Acute dialysis experience (preferred).
