Job Summary Under supervision of the RN, the Mental Health Worker assists in direct patient care. This includes activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, ambulating and taking vital signs; performing patient rounding, unit video surveillance and unit door access per department policy to ensure patient safety; answering phones and directing calls appropriately; assisting with check‑in visitors; documenting accurate information into the EMR flow sheets; participating in milieu groups and demonstrating knowledge of therapeutic and crisis intervention skills; and performing other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Assisting with feeding, bathing, ambulating and taking vital signs.
Performing patient rounding, unit video surveillance and door access per department policy.
Answering phones and directing calls appropriately.
Assisting with check‑in visitors.
Documenting accurate information into EMR flow sheets.
Participating in milieu groups and demonstrating therapeutic and crisis intervention skills.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six (6) months of hire date.
Two (2) years of relevant experience, including one (1) year of experience providing direct patient care.
Excellent communication skills with patients, staff, and other disciplines in a constructive, professional manner.
Ability to work with a diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
CPI or equivalent certification.
Previous experience working with geriatric and dementia patients.
Experience with inpatient psychiatric patients.
Experience with Epic and related UCSD systems. Familiar with UCSD policies and procedures.
Special Conditions
Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on‑call, and locations based on the 24‑hour Medical Center’s business needs.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.
Pay & Transparency Annual Full Pay Range: $50,446 - $62,744 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $24.16 - $30.05 Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
Vaccination & Safety Policies Employment requires compliance with the University of California Policy on Vaccination Programs and any applicable public health directives. Life‑support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands‑on practice and in‑person skills assessment; online‑only certification is not acceptable.
Misconduct Disclosure Requirement As a condition of employment, the final candidate who accepts an offer of employment will be required to disclose, within the last seven years, any final administrative or judicial decisions regarding misconduct, or any appeals of such decisions.
