Essential Functions

Directs and oversees the functionality and safety of the vessel’s engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration, and sanitary systems in accordance with Trident policy and local, state and federal laws and regulations.

Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.

Must be able to give specific directions in the case of an emergency. Can include launching a raft, donning an immersion suit or life preserver, and assisting in a response to fire or flooding.

Directs and oversees required documentation for energy management, conservation and preventive maintenance programs.

Confers with Captain and management to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.

Oversees the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or certification requirements.

Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, and/or inter‑departmental relations.

Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Additional Responsibilities Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.

Licenses and Permits Appropriate licences/permits of trade (e.g., CG licence of appropriate horsepower, STCW endorsement, etc.) when required.

Preferred Experience Catcher Boats and Factory Trawlers:

Two years as Engineer of a fishing boat in the fishery being applied for.

Five plus years as a deckhand on a fishing boat in the fishery being applied for.

Intermediate engineering knowledge.

Advanced firefighting skills.

Current First Aid and CPR cards.

Clean vessel safety record.

Familiarity with all state and federal requirements/regulations for the fishery being applied for.

Familiarity with pollution abatement procedures.

Basic HR awareness and training.

** Subject to random selection drug screens as required by USCG.

Special Training/Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software.

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision.

Mental Activities While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, write and understand English and use customer service skills. The employee is frequently required to utilize interpersonal, teamwork, decision making skills, creativity, independent judgment, discretion, problem analysis, and supervision skills.
