We are looking for a lead Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) researcher to join our growing Sustainability team. As a lead Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) researcher, you will be responsible for leading assessments of environmental issues across the full spectrum of Amazon businesses and evaluating the sustainability impacts across the value chain. The ideal candidate will have strong industry experience modeling complex systems, developing LCAs and emission factors (EFs), collecting and analyzing data, and reporting results to leaders through visualizations and metrics. The candidate must be experienced working with imperfect data and quantifying and identifying sources of uncertainty. The successful candidate must have strong math skills, apply systems thinking to complex, fast‑moving problems, and possess strong working knowledge of scientific methods and international standards (GHG Protocol, ISO). Extensive experience using Ecoinvent, GaBi, and USEEIO databases is required. This candidate will also work under the direction of senior business leaders, but will act as lead Subject Matter Expert for all LCA‑related analyses at Amazon, including designing and leading research, data collection, modeling, documentation, interpretation, and validation.

Key Job Responsibilities

Create and maintain ambiguous and/or complex LCA methodologies and models, including experimentation of footprint methods.

Develop documentation for validations and assurance purposes.

Ideate the creation and interpretation of innovative and novel methods and standards.

Scale validations of methodologies or complex models for use in Amazon’s Corporate Carbon Footprint.

Conduct research on new machine‑learning and AI models and develop comprehensive data foundation, accurate and scalable methods to solve our hardest sustainability problems.

Basic Qualifications

PhD, or Master’s degree and 4+ years of quantitative field research experience.

Knowledge of R, MATLAB, Python or similar scripting language.

Experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems and products.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with agile development.

Experience consulting with senior leadership and executives in a fast‑paced environment.

Experience programming, prototyping and scripting with Oracle, SQL, Hive, Pig, SAS, R, Weka, or Python.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $212,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
