The role oversees payroll operations and HRIS management, driving process optimization through Workday HCM configuration, reporting and data integrity initiatives. The Director ensures operational excellence in Workday and acts as a key connector across Human Resources, Financial Affairs, and Information Technology to strengthen internal controls and streamline administrative processes.

They pursue continuous improvement, balancing payroll compliance with process redesign, data integrity, and cross-departmental collaboration.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Workday/HRIS Administration:
Serve as the primary subject matter expert and point of contact for Workday HCM and Payroll, providing front-line support, troubleshooting and guidance to HR staff and campus stakeholders. Administer system configuration, testing, reporting and enhancements across all HR modules (benefits, compensation, payroll, talent, absence management). Ensure data integrity through regular audits, reconciliations and validation processes; establish protocols for accurate data management. Manage Workday security roles, permissions, and tenant performance. Lead system upgrades, testing and new module implementations in collaboration with IT and third-party vendors. Identify and implement opportunities to improve HR processes through technology optimization, automation, and streamlined workflows.
Leadership and Operational Oversight:
Provide leadership to the payroll and HR operations team, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant processing of payrolls for faculty, staff, student employees and temporary workers. Oversee daily operations of HR systems and payroll, ensuring accuracy, compliance and high-quality service. Partner with HR leadership, Benefits, Financial Affairs and IT to align systems and processes with the employee experience and institutional goals. Establish and maintain standard operating procedures to ensure consistency, accountability and operational excellence. Promote a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement, identifying inefficiencies and implementing solutions that enhance workflow automation and service delivery.
Payroll Management:
Oversee end-to-end payroll processing and reconciliation for all employee groups, ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and university policies. Direct preparation and filing of payroll-related reports; ensure accuracy of tax withholdings, deductions and contributions. Act as primary liaison with external entities (IRS, garnishments agencies, taxing authorities). Coordinate with Financial Services to manage payroll expenditures, withholdings, vendor payments and benefit contributions. Provide backup support for payroll processing as needed. Participate in financial and benefits audits, ensuring full documentation and audit compliance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Information Systems or a related field.
Four years of direct, hands-on experience in Workday HCM, including configuration, reporting and business process workflows.
Demonstrated experience with payroll administration, including federal and state tax compliance, W-2 processing, garnishments, retirement contributions and benefit deductions.
Proven experience leading process improvement initiatives and implementing technology-driven HR solutions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a customer service orientation.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated curiosity, adaptability, and a continuous improvement mindset.
Ability to build strong working relationships across departments and functions.
Nice to haves
Experience working in higher education.
Supervisory experience leading payroll or HR operations staff.
Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
