Overview

The City of Lakewood is currently accepting applications for the position of Facilities Maintenance Lead Worker (Skilled Trades Lead Worker) to create an eligibility list for a future vacancy that is anticipated in April of 2026. Responsibilities

Plans, schedules, assigns, inspects, leads and participates in the work of personnel engaged in all aspects of skilled maintenance work including carpentry, painting, electrical, low voltage, plumbing, concrete, masonry, traffic signage, and graffiti removal Installs and repairs building related infrastructure Assembles and repairs playground equipment, fencing, gates and backstops Installation and breakdown of equipment for special city events (including but not limited to traffic control, platforms, bleachers, emergency equipment, and lighting) Maintains and repairs pool chlorination systems Prepares cost estimates of materials and labor for construction or repair jobs Assists with the inspection of work performed by outside contractors and provides necessary on-site direction and assistance Assists with the directing and coordinating temporary traffic lane or street closures Assists with ordering of building construction materials and supplies Prepares reports of time and materials used on jobs Assists in preparation of the department budget Assists with the implementation of preventive maintenance programs Assists with coordinating maintenance projects with other departments and agencies as necessary Utilizes the computerized work order program to retrieve information, approve and assign work, and generate reports Interprets and works from plans, drawings and specifications Assists with maintaining facility equipment inventories such as HVAC equipment, electrical infrastructure, roofing, playground equipment, and athletic field lighting May assist in the planning and design of facility related capital projects Performs other related duties as required. Education and Experience

Education and Experience : Any combination of education, training and experience that would provide the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical example would be four years of responsible work experience in the semi-skilled and skilled maintenance of public facilities. At least one year in a lead capacity is highly desirable License/Certifications

Possession of a valid Class “C” Operator’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record. Possession of (or the ability to obtain within 6 months) a valid CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatics Facilities Operator) certification. Possession of a CPSI (Certified Playground Safety Inspector) certification is highly desirable Knowledge

Knowledge of:

Standard practices of the skilled maintenance trades, (electrical, low voltage, carpentry, plumbing, painting, graffiti removal, traffic sign repair, special event traffic control, concrete and masonry work) including the methods, tools, equipment and terminology used in installation, alteration and repair work; the operation and maintenance of water purification chlorinating systems; safe work practices including accepted work area traffic control methods; best management practices with stormwater pollution prevention; federal, state and local laws, codes and safety orders governing the maintenance, repair and construction of public buildings, structures, pools and related facilities; basic leadership practices and techniques; handling, use and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals; personal computers and common software programs. Knowledge of new construction and refurbishments is desirable. Skills & Abilities

Plan, schedule, assign, inspect, lead and participate in the work of skilled maintenance personnel engaged in the repair, maintenance, installation, and construction of city infrastructure, parks and facilities; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work; follow oral and written directions; read and interpret plans and specifications; make accurate cost estimates for construction materials and labor; maintain accurate records and files; effectively use computer software programs including the City’s computerized work order and budget information programs to access and retrieve information, budget, and enter requisitions. Physical and Mental Demands/Environmental Exposure

Physical and Mental Demands/Environmental Exposure:

Ability to read and write, and to operate a computer and other office machines; drive city vehicles; and communicate orally and in writing. Must be able to work with a full range of body movements involving reaching, bending, stooping, and grasping; perform heavy lifting and carrying on a regular basis; lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must have the physical agility to work in cramped spaces; stand and walk for long periods of time; and the strength to perform heavy labor. Must have dexterity to use hand and power-driven tools and must have normal vision and hearing ability. May be exposed to variable weather conditions and noise from power-driven tools. Benefits

Retirement Formula - The City participates in the CalPERS retirement system 2% at 55 for "classic" CalPERS members and 2% at 62 for "new" CalPERS members 2. The City does not participate in Social Security Generous Leave Programs - 13 paid holidays; sick leave; and two weeks annual vacation (three weeks after three years, four weeks after 15 years) Health Insurance - Cafeteria benefit plan includes medical and dental options (City participates in the CalPERS medical insurance plans). Employee cafeteria allowance for single employee only coverage is $1,359.02 per month; for employee +1 eligible dependent coverage is $1,640.00; and for employee + 2 or more eligible dependents coverage is $1,900.00. City paid life insurance, long-term disability and vision insurance for the employee. Other Benefits : Longevity pay beginning at the completion of 10 years of qualified service; career medical retiree benefit programs. 1. Benefits package information is based on current benefit information and subject to change, based on labor agreements; federal, state and/or local laws or resolutions. 2. For qualified public employees who are "classic" CalPERS members and City employees with membership into CalPERS prior to 1/1/2013 enrollment will be into the 2% at 55 formula. Pension benefits for employees hired on or after 1/1/2013 and are "new" CalPERS members are subject to the Public Employees Pension Reform Act provisions and will be enrolled into the 2% at 62 formula. Selection Procedure

COMPENSATION:

The employment of relatives can create undesirable results, particularly in connection with performance evaluation, discipline, and general morale of other workers. Therefore, it is the city's policy that no relative of any City officer or employee to which this resolution applies shall be employed, if said City officer or employee is in a supervisory, lead or subordinate position over said relative in the areas of hiring, setting compensation, discipline or termination. "Relatives" for this purpose include son, daughter, mother, father, brother, brother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, stepparent, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, or persons living in the same household. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:

Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening for safety sensitive positions. Physicals are performed by the City\'s designated physician at the City\'s expense. Candidates are cautioned not to quit their jobs or give notice to their current employers until they are determined to be medically qualified. TUBERCULOSIS TESTING:

Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. The certificate or notice must be signed by a licensed examining physician or public health agency. POSSESSION OF A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER\'S LICENSE:

Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver\'s license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver\'s license and reflects the driving record. All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment. EMERGENCY SERVICE:

All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster. PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees appointed to positions in the classified service are required to serve a probationary period of not less than six months. All other employees are considered at-will and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
