Seasonal Maintenance Mechanic – National Park Service Open continuous vacancy announcement for temporary seasonal position not to exceed 1,039 hours of work in a service year. Applicant review will occur throughout the announcement period, with final disposition completed once all positions are filled or the announced period ends. The last cut‑off date is 11:59 pm (est) January 20, 2026.

Duties

Works from plans, specifications, and/or verbal description.

Works as a journeyman, constructs, alters, modifies and/or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters, backcountry structures and other facilities.

Constructs storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, and flooring.

Corrects and maintains historic building features and fixtures and finishes products with precise, accurate dimensions and acceptable appearance.

Performs maintenance, repair, restoration, and stabilization of cultural resources.

Builds stone masonry walls to duplicate or match original masonry.

Removes portions of standing walls and stabilizes remaining historic fabric by capping, veneering, and mortaring.

Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, gas distribution systems, water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers; lays out such things as angles, arcs, and circles.

Lays sewer tile, replaces stools, lavatories; replaces pumps and water meters.

Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion.

Paints, decorates, and refinishes a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices and buildings, family dwellings, other structures, finishing, and equipment.

Completes all painting, varnishing, etc. functions including marbling, graining, speckling, tinting and toning of paint, and matching existing colors; performs secondary maintenance duties involving electrical systems, roofing, HVAC systems, and welding.

Physical Demands Physical effort is heavy to moderate. Requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 60 lbs unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently must stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. May hike long distances, up to 15 miles while carrying a backpack and work gear.

Working Conditions Exposed to a wide range of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures −40 to 90+ °F). Subject to the danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, plants, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of official duties; a valid driver's license is required.

Will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and all certified driving records from all states.

Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.

May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with a high‑school diploma, certificate, vocational training, or other qualifying experience; or be currently enrolled in a secondary school and work either only during school vacation periods or part‑time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee’s responsibility.

Qualifications

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)

Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Measurement and layout.

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of materials.

Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Information An initially appointed temporary employee will receive only the lowest step of the grade for which they are selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
