Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Linux Administrator to support a mission-critical research environment that directly enables world-class research. This is an individual-contributor role requiring deep technical knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux ecosystems (Rocky Linux, RHEL, CentOS), automation, and operational excellence in a highly collaborative non-profit research setting. This position is located within a group otherwise engaged in management of Windows-based directory services and Nutanix virtual environments, that is transitioning to a more DevSecOps automated operations regime.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
W2 Only
3+ years of hands-on Linux systems administration experience in production environments
Experience with Rocky Linux and other Red Hat-based distributions
Core Technical Competencies Administration of Rocky Linux/RHEL including:
Systems service management
Package management (dnf/yum)
Filesystem administration and optimization (ext4, XFS, LVM)
Security hardening and compliance (CIS benchmarks, SELinux, firewalld)
SSSD and Active Directory realm binding
Patch management strategies and execution
Kernel, filesystem, and network performance tuning
Networking Competencies
Strong proficiency in core networking concepts and protocols, including:
In-depth understanding of the TCP/IP stack and packet flow
IPv4/IPv6 addressing, subnetting, VLSM, and CIDR notation
Static and dynamic routing principles (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP experience a plus)
Configuration and troubleshooting of DHCP, DNS (including BIND and authoritative/resolver roles), and related services
VLANs, trunking (802.1Q), and Layer 2/Layer 3 switching fundamentals
Common network services and protocols (NTP, SNMP, ICMP, ARP, etc.)
Packet analysis using tools such as tcpdump and Wireshark
Scripting capability:
Bash, sed, awk, grep (must be able to develop and debug complex scripts)
Key Responsibilities
Proactively monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot Linux-based research computing systems serving premier biomedical researchers
Provide white-glove, courteous, and clear technical support via ticket system and direct researcher interaction
Partner with DevSecOps and InfoSec team members to create, enhance, and harden automation of Linux system management
Own and continuously improve Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in Confluence
Actively participate in weekly Change Control process using Jira Service Management
Maintain accurate, real-time infrastructure documentation and asset records in NetBox and JSM Assets; coordinate with Finance for federal grant compliance
Track daily tasks, projects, and deliverables in Jira; participate in monthly workload review
Collaborate closely with DevSecOps, Network, Windows, HPC and Information Security teams to resolve complex incidents
Offer guidance and mentorship to other technical staff to learn Linux system administration and related technologies and skillsets
