Overview Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

HOURS OF WORK : 4/10s or 5/8s; Days off vary

LOCATION : 4501 Elmore Road / 716 W 4th Avenue

Responsibilities

Under close direction perform entry level technical tasks.

Receive training and instruction in the Police Data System field.

Perform technical duties related to troubleshooting, monitoring, and operating information systems and equipment, including upgrading, installing, and repairing systems and providing technical office/field hardware and software support.

Provide technical assistance for the Police Data System.

Other duties as assigned.

Serve as the first point of contact for IT support requests, providing assistance to end‑users via phone, email, or in person.

Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network connectivity issues on desktops, laptops, printers, mobile devices, and other peripherals.

Install, configure, and update software applications and operating systems, ensuring compliance with organizational standards.

Manage and maintain user accounts, permissions, and access in Active Directory and other identity management systems.

Document support requests, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions in the IT ticketing system.

Educate users on IT policies, best practices, and basic troubleshooting techniques.

Escalate complex or unresolved issues to higher‑level IT staff or specialized teams.

Assist with hardware deployments, including imaging new computers, configuring devices, and maintaining accurate asset inventory records.

Monitor and respond to system alerts, ensuring timely action to prevent or address system downtime.

Participate in IT projects, including system upgrades, migrations, and implementation of new technologies.

Perform routine maintenance on IT equipment.

Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and trends.

Qualifications

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and five (5) years of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which includes working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities.

Associate’s degree in Computer Science, or a related discipline, and three (3) years of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which includes working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, and one (1) year of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which includes working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities.

Additional Requirements

Must possess and/or obtain satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.

Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

Satisfactory national criminal background investigation (13 AAC 85.010, and 13 AAC 85.210) and financial review at time of hire.

Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.

Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check within six (6) months of hire.

Priority

Preference will be given to Anchorage Police Department (APD) employees. APD employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non‑APD applicants.

Military Service Interview Preference: Veterans and National Guard members must provide appropriate documentation and meet minimum qualifications.

Internal Selection Process The APD Internal Selection Process will be utilized. The process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

Oral Board (minimum 60% passing score).

Discipline Review (For internal applicants only).

Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer. The list will be re‑ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline (For internal applicants only).

The eligibility list for the Data Systems Technician I assignment is good for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published (for internal applicants only).

Appointment Conditions Appointment to this position will be conditional upon satisfactory results of the following: an extensive background and financial check; and a drug screen. If selected for hire, the appointment in this position requires Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) and FBI National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within 30 days of hire, and Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) security clearance at time of hire. Failure to obtain these clearances and access within the specified timeline may result in termination.

All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
